Clarkson Drops Twin Bill at Cortland, 8-1 and 6-1

Cortland, NY – Held to nine hits over the course of 16 innings, the Clarkson University Baseball team's offense was quieted by SUNY Cortland on Thursday as the Red Dragons defeated the Golden Knights in a doubleheader sweep, 8-1 and 6-1.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-5 on the season while Cortland moved to 4-2.  Clarkson will be back in Cortland this weekend, taking on Cazenovia College at a neutral site field.

In the first game, the Knights opened the scoring in the top of the third as Michael Tito singled to center with two outs. He moved over to third on an Evan Lira base hit and then came home on a wild pitch to put the Knights up 1-0.

Cortland got its offense going in the bottom of the fifth, scoring its first run on a wild pitch as well. However, the Red Dragons then strung together five consecutive run-scoring singles as Scott Giordano, James Varian, Daniel Coleman, Matthew Krafft, and Ben Rhodes kept the line moving that inning. In the sixth, the Dragons added a run on a two-out single from Coleman, and in the bottom of the eighth Rhodes delivered two-out magic with a single to plate a run.

Tito was 2-for-4 in the game for Clarkson, but the Knights mustered just four hits. Eric Corhouse took the loss for Clarkson, throwing 4.1 innings.

In game two, the Red Dragons jumped out quickly as Colin BeVard doubled in a run and then another run came around on a throwing error in the bottom of the first. One inning later, BeVard hit a three-run homer to right to put Cortland up 5-0, and the Red Dragons completed their scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Krafft hit a solo shot to left-center. Clarkson got its lone run of the game in the seventh as Jonathan Irons doubled with one out and then came home on a single by Derek Cuyler. Irons was the lone Clarkson player with multiple hits in the second game, going 2-for-4.
