First Half Run Helps Knights Speed Away from Bard

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – Senior Matt Higgins scored 23 of his game-high 28 points in the first half as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team used a 17-0 run in the early going to build a big lead which it would never relinquish in a 77-55 victory over Bard College in Liberty League action Friday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League with the victory, while Bard remained winless at 0-10 and 0-4. Clarkson looks to edge over .500 in conference tomorrow at Vassar, while the Raptors hope to get on the winning side of things against St. Lawrence.

Bard may have scored two of the first three baskets of the game, but the Raptors struggled for the next eight minutes as Clarkson went on a 17-0 run. Matt Higgins and Roburt Welch each hit 3-pointers in that stretch and Ryan Miles-Ferguson completed a three-point play on a basket and free throw to close out the run. While Bard may have halted the Golden Knights' run, the Green and Gold were far from finished. Matt Higgins hit four straight 3-pointers to change the score from 25-10 to 37-13 and the rout was on. The Knights pushed the lead to as many as 31 points in the first half thanks to a stifling defense that created regular turnovers (14), and Joe Lucas's 3-pointer at the buzzer assured Clarkson of a 30-point advantage at the break.

Higgins had 23 points at the break thanks to five 3-point field goals. Clarkson made nine 3-pointers overall in the first half and held a 23-17 edge in rebounds and committed just six turnovers compared to 14 for Bard, from which the Knights scored 20 points. The Raptors shot just 5-for-20 in the first half.

The Knights scored the first two baskets of the second half to push the margin to as many as 34, but Bard was able to cut the deficit to 19 points with a 12-0 run, pulling the Raptors to within 19 with just under 11 minutes to go. That was as close as Bard would get, however, as the Clarkson bench had more than enough fire power down the stretch to keep the Raptors at a safe distance.

Higgins finished with 28 points in 22 minutes, shooting 10-for-18 from the floor overall. Ryan Miles-Ferguson scored 11 points in 20 minutes off the bench, going 5-for-7 from the floor. He also added in four rebounds and two steals in the game. Chris Hulbert also reached double figures with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting. For Bard, Stamatis Koulouris and Stefanos Psarras each scored 12 points, with the latter also grabbing eight rebounds.
