Knights Unable to Recover from Early Vassar Run in 82-64 Loss

Poughkeepsie, NY – On the wrong end of a 17-0 run early in the second half, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team played virtually even the remainder of the game but was unable to recover from that initial rush as the Golden Knights dropped an 82-64 decision to Vassar in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-8 and 2-3 in the Liberty League, while Vassar swept its weekend and moved to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in conference games. Clarkson faces Skidmore College and Ithaca College next weekend, beginning a stretch where the team will play six of seven games at home.

Vassar dominated on the glass in the first half, leading to much of the Brewers' success, owning a 36-11 edge in rebounds with 15 offensive boards. The Brewers finished with a 56-21 advantage in rebounding overall, more than making up for a significant deficit in turnovers where Clarkson forced 17 and committed just four.

Clarkson scored the first basket, but then went cold as Vassar rattled off 17 straight points. The Knights turned the ball over three times and went 0-for-7 while watching the Brewers score on the inside. Eventually the Knights righted themselves on offense, but Clarkson remained too far behind to ever make a run at Vassar for the rest of the contest.

Sophomore Chris Hulbert scored a team-high 20 points, with 15 coming in the second half, thanks to a 5-for-11 effort from beyond the 3-point arc. Freshman Ryan Miles-Ferguson shot 4-for-7 from the floor and was the only other Clarkson player in double figures, tossing in 11 points for the Knights.

For Vassar, Zach Johnson contributed a double-double, scoring 20 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Avni Mustafaj added 13 points and Zach Bromfeld was a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Vassar scored 64 of its 82 points in the paint.
