Knights Beat Plattsburgh for First Time in Two Decades

Plattsburgh, NY – Junior Mack Walton picked up his second goal of the week and the score proved to be the game-winner as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team beat Plattsburgh State 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights edged back over .500 with the win, improving to 4-3-0 on the season, while the Cardinals fell to 2-5-0. It was Clarkson's first victory against Plattsburgh since the regular season finale in 1998. Clarkson looks to maintain its winning streak when the team hosts St. Lawrence University at 7:00 pm on Wednesday night at Hantz Turf Field.

The lone goal of the contest showed just how quickly and out of nowhere a goal can come. Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs sent a goal kick into the midfield where it was headed forward. The loose ball was picked up in transition and three Plattsburgh defenders converged to try and alter the possession, but that overaggressiveness proved costly as a quickly tapped pass put Clarkson in a 2-on-1 situation. A rapid cross found Walton on the left side of the goal, but the junior slipped and the play appeared over. However, Walton quickly regained his feet and sent a groundball past the Plattsburgh goalkeeper and another defender to put Clarkson up 1-0 at the 21:02 mark.

The goal would stand up, as Plattsburgh found itself playing down a player for the final seven-plus minutes of the game. Yellow cards were exchanged by a Clarkson and Plattsburgh player in the 83rd minute, but the Cardinals took things too far and ended up with a second yellow, forcing a red card, and making a comeback less likely.

Clarkson finished with a 13-8 edge in shots, though each team recorded six shots on goal in the contest, and the Knights closed with a modest 5-3 advantage in corner kick chances. Ian Roeloffs made six saves for the shutout, while Ryan Wilson denied five shots for the Cardinals.
