Late Goal Allows Knights to Gain Tie Versus SLU

Potsdam, NY - For the first time in 22 years, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and St. Lawrence battled to a draw, as a goal in the 86th minute allowed the Golden Knights to earn a 1-1 tie against the Saints in the both teams' Liberty League opener Wednesday evening.

The Golden Knights moved to 4-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in Liberty League play while St. Lawrence remained at .500 at 3-3-1 and 0-0-1. Clarkson travels to take on RIT on Saturday afternoon in another Liberty League contest.

The last two times that the teams needed overtime to decide the outcome, St. Lawrence scored in overtime to gain wins (2008, 1999).

Clarkson fell behind early following a fluky call that put the Knights at a disadvantage. With pressure on a Clarkson player the ball was played back to the Knights' goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs, who thought he could pick the ball up. Unfortunately for Clarkson, it was deemed a handball since it was kicked back to Roeloffs, and the Saints were awarded a kick from about 15 yards out. With a wall of several players in the way of a direct shot, Sam Sapnar wisely chose to pass the ball across the box, feigning a shot and instead sending the ball to Marvin Sibanda, who drilled a shot to the opposite corner for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead just 6:05 into the game.

The play was essentially even for the rest of the game, with Roeloffs making a big save on a slide near the middle of the box in the 58th minute to keep Clarkson in contention. That deflection proved vital for the Knights' chances as the Green and Gold hung in and eventually got the equalizer. Jevaughn Sinclair gained control near the top right of the penalty area and sent a cross over to Cam Emde-Gerdine. The freshman gathered himself and took a step to his right before drilling a shot to the opposite post at 85:18.

Both teams made solid runs in the overtime periods, but none of the effort resulted in a goal, as the two teams tied for the first time since 1997 and just the sixth time in 63 all-time meetings. Clarkson finished with a modest 10-8 edge in shots and a 3-2 lead in corner kick chances. Ian Roeloffs made four saves for the Knights and Ben Woelfinger matched that total with four saves of his own.
