Knights Split at Rochester With 2-1 Win and 2-1 Loss

Rochester, NY – Runs were at a premium on Saturday afternoon as the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader against University of Rochester, winning the opener 2-1 but dropping the nightcap by the same score.

The Golden Knights moved to 9-7 on the season and became the last team in the conference to suffer a defeat, falling to 5-1 in the Liberty League. Rochester moved to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in league contests. The two teams will meet up for another doubleheader starting at 12:00 noon on Sunday.

Offense was muted in game one as both teams produced just four hits in the contest.  Clarkson struck first with a run in the top of the second as Vincent Granuzzo led off the frame with a single. Nate Burns eliminated Granuzzo on a fielder's choice, but the Knights put runners on first and second when Mike Nee followed with a walk. Two batters later, Joe Stockman stroked a single to right to put the Knights up 1-0. Rochester scored in the bottom half of the same inning when Jack Herman singled and then moved to third on a Jake Hertz base hit. A wild pitch then plated Herman, tying the game 1-1.

It wasn't until the top of the fifth that Clarkson would score again as Mike Messier led off the inning by driving an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run. Clarkson starting pitcher Ryan Riley would make Messier's blast hold up, as he wiggled out of a seventh-inning jam. Ryland McNabb drew a one-out walk and then moved up on a wild pitch, but Riley struck out the next hitter and then induced a ground out to end the game.

Riley finished with eight strikeouts against just two walks and four hits in seven innings of work for his third win of the season. Riley's counterpart, Garrett Renslow of Rochester, was also sharp, giving up a similar line of four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Game two was more of the same as both teams struggled to send any runners around the bases. Clarkson picked up its lone run of the game in the top of the second as Tommy Bianchi reached when he was hit by a pitcher and then pushed to second on a walk by Mike Krick. Caleb Doyle then reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third, where Stockman again delivered a single to right to put the Knights up 1-0.

Rochester had threatened in the bottom of the first with runners on second and third with one out and then loaded the bases with two outs, but Ben Shpur escaped the predicament with a fly out to right. In the sixth, runners were on second and third after a balk, but Mark Connor ended that scoring opportunity for the Yellowjackets with a strikeout.

In the seventh, the Knights were not so lucky as two soft singles put runners on for Rochester. Aidan Finch then sent a ball to the left-center gap, but the fly ball was dropped and both runners circled the bases or pair of unearned runs. The Knights made it out of the inning without further damage, but Clarkson was unable to score against relievers Hank Powers and Brendan Shamieh, with the latter gaining the save with a scoreless ninth.

Granuzzo was 2-for-4 in game two for the Knights and Shpur enjoyed a solid start with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Connor took the loss with two unearned runs in 2.2 innings. Jon Turk gained the win for Rochester, pitching to contact with just one strikeout against two walks and four hits in seven innings.
