Knights Gain Series Win at Rochester with Sunday Sweep

Rochester, NY - A weekend after offense ruled, the Clarkson University Baseball team's pitching staff produced an overall sterling effort, including a sweep on Sunday against Rochester in which the team earned wins in the opener, 2-0, and in the nightcap, 10-2.

The Golden Knights moved to 11-7 overall and 7-1 in the Liberty League, while Rochester dropped to 12-12 and 6-6 in conference games. Clarkson faces Oswego State on Tuesday and returns home next weekend for a four-game series against RIT.

Over the course of 16 innings, the Golden Knights' pitching staff allowed just 11 hits and two runs. For the weekend, the Knights' pitchers combined for a 0.87 earned run average, the team's best four-game run in league play since the team tossed four straight shutouts against Skidmore College at the end of the 2014 regular season.

In the first game, Clarkson posted only five hits, but pushed two runs across in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Brad Pearson doubled down the left field line and moved up on a ground out. Mike Nee then took a 2-2 pitch to right to drive in Pearson for a 1-0 Clarkson lead. In the bottom of the second, Nolan Duda reached on an error by one of the Rochester outfielders and moved all the way up to third. Joe Stockman then singled to center for Clarkson's second run of the game.

That was all the support that senior Mike Bubniak would need, as he pitched to contact and limited the Yellowjackets' ability to make solid contact. Bubniak struck out only one hitter, but was stingy nevertheless, allowing just three hits and one walk. Bubniak cruised through four innings before the Yellowjackets put a runner on third in the fifth. In the seventh, Bubniak started to stray slightly, hitting a batter and walking another before a fielder's choice loaded the bases. Junior Mark Connor came on and got an infield grounder to get out of the jam, earning the one-out save and giving Bubniak his third win of the year.

Game two was close until the latter innings. Clarkson pushed two across in the bottom of the first as Duda singled home Pearson and then later came home on a wild pitch. Rochester scored one in the third and tied the game in the sixth on a two-out hit. However, the Knights unloaded on the Rochester bullpen in the seventh and eight innings. Mike Tito led off the seventh with a single and then came home on a Pearson triple to return the lead to Clarkson, but the rally was far from over. Duda singled up the middle to plate Pearson and he scored on a throwing error a few batters later. Mike Krick doubled home another run and a sac bunt by Joe Stockman drove in the fifth tally of the inning. In the top of the eighth, Nate Burns escaped a bases loaded jam with a fly out and ground out, and Clarkson used that momentum to put the game out of reach in the eight. Krick doubled in both Tito and Pearson and scored on a Stockman single for the game's final score.

Pearson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three extra-base hits in the contest, while duda was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two more driven in. Krick also had a pair of doubles, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Burns picked up the win in relief, closing out the final 3.1 innings with two strikeouts and four hits allowed. Ethan Kornbrek made the start and struck out two in three innings while Kyle Locklear whiffed four in 2.2 innings of relief work.
