Back-to-Back Shutouts for Knights in Sweep at SLU

Canton, NY – Olivia Zoeller and Sam Mennig pitched back-to-back shutouts on Sunday as the Clarkson University Softball team swept a two-game set from St. Lawrence 5-0 and 7-0 in Liberty League action at Saints Softball Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 19-11 overall and moved to 4-4 in the Liberty League with six conference games left to play. St. Lawrence dropped to 10-12 on the season and 0-8 in the league. Clarkson is scheduled for a non-league doubleheader against Alfred on Tuesday.

In game one, Clarkson got all the runs it would need behind Olivia Zoeller's performance in its first at bat. Raeanna Dunn opened the game with an infield single and then stole second and third. She came around on a Liz Caggiano ground out to put the Knights up 1-0 in the first. The Knights would be quiet on offense until the fifth, when Dunn drew a two-out walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Danielle Whitham made that effort all the less important when she tripled to right-center, allowing Dunn to easily trot the final 60 feet home.

The Knights put the game away in the sixth with three more insurance runs. Michele Winn led off with a single and Sarah Vaccaro reached on an error. After a ground out put those two runners on second and third, Kayla Robert doubled to center, allowing Winn to score but Vaccaro to hold up at third as she was unsure if the ball would be caught. Maddie Brink followed with a single to plate Vaccaro and Ryle LeBourveau then delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in the final run.

Zoeller struck out 10 and allowed just three hits and no walks in seven innings for her seventh win of the year. Robert went 2-for-3 at the dish and Dunn scored twice. Caroline Young took the loss for the Saints, allowing three earned run in five innings of work with two strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, things were quiet for the first six innings before Clarkson opened up with a five-spot in the top of the seventh. The Knights had a runner on third with one out in the second and a runner on third with two outs in the third but was unable to get either across. St. Lawrence also had the bases loaded and one out in the second but failed to score, and a leadoff single and stolen base had the Saints threatening with none out in the third, but three fly outs ended that chance.

In the top of the seventh, Clarkson pushed seven runs across in a steady rain to keep the game from getting suspended. Kyrstin Messier and Kayla Robert delivered back-to-back singles to open the inning and each moved up a base on a ground out. Rylee LeBourveau then singled back off the pitcher to drive in the game's first run, but the Knights continued to add on after that. Dunn singled to shortstop to plate a second run, Danielle Whitham tripled to center to plate two more and Liz Caggiano sent Whitham home on a single to make it 5-0. Michele Winn and Kayla Robert then singled to load the bases, setting up Messier for her second at bat of the inning, and she drove in a pair with a double.

Dunn (2-for-4), Caggiano (2-for-3) and Messier (2-for-4) each had multi-hit games in the second contest. Sam Mennig picked up the win with the Knights' second straight shutout of the day, allowing four hits and one walk with five strikeouts over seven scoreless frames.
