Knights Split with Alfred, Pick Up 20th Win of the Year

Potsdam, NY – With a win in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader, the Clarkson University Softball team reached 20 wins for the third time in program history as the Golden Knights split a twin bill against Alfred University, dropping the opener 9-5 in extra innings and taking the nightcap 6-2 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 20-12 on the season and Alfred University saw its record go to 17-15. Clarkson is scheduled to take on RIT and Rochester this Friday and Saturday, but the weather forecast may have the teams scrambling for alternate dates.

In the first game the two teams needed extra innings to decide the matter, as both teams scored in the eighth and the Saxons piled on four runs in the top of the ninth to earn the win. Alfred began its scoring in the first with three straight hits, including an RBI single by Delaney Kelly. Clarkson responded in the bottom half of the first with an unearned run when Michele Winn doubled home Danielle Whitham, who earlier reached second on a dropped exchange on a fielder's choice. In the third Tati Mejia put the Saxons back up by a run with a sacrifice fly, but the Knights tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth. Raeanna Dunn singled and stole second and then came around on a single by Whitham.

In the seventh inning, Alfred pushed two across with hits by Kelley Staub and Elena Ceja, but the Saxons would not get away with a win that quickly. Kayla Robert opened the bottom half of the frame with a single and Maddie Brink immediately followed with a line drive two-run homer to left-center. Using international tie-breaking rules beginning in the eighth, each team scored once thanks to a runner being placed on second. In the ninth, however, Alfred was able to string together enough hits and take advantage of a handful of Clarkson miscues to score four times and come away with a victory.

Whitham finished 3-for-4 in the opener for the Knights, while Brink was 2-for-3.

In game two, Leah Allen made Alfred keep the ball on the ground, inducing 14 grounders for outs. Clarkson backed up the junior's effort with a run in the third and five in the fourth. In the bottom half of the third, Whitham singled and moved up a base when the throw on her hit went high at first. Hannah Bowen then sent her sprinting home with a single to left for a 1-0 Clarkson lead. In the fourth, however, the Knights really broke through with a five-spot. Maddie Brink started things off with a single and Sarah Vaccaro doubled to put runners at second and third. Rylee LeBourveau then reached on an error to load the bases, setting up Danielle Whitham for a two-run double. Bowen followed with an infield single to score another run and Liz Caggiano hit a sacrifice fly to plate another. Alyssa Schaechinger tacked on a single to center to score the fifth run and give the Knights a 6-0 lead.

Alfred got back into the game in the sixth, loading the bases with none out. A two-run single by Elena Ceja not only put the Saxons on the board, but kept the rally going. However, Allen escaped without further damage, getting a double-play ball and one more ground out to end the threat.

Whitham finished game two by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two more driven in. Bowen also was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Allen was solid in the circle, striking out three and allowing just six hits and no walks in seven innings for her sixth win of the year.
