Clarkson Splits Doubleheader for Second Straight Day

Rochester, NY – Senior Liz Caggiano hit two home runs and Michele Winn added another as the Clarkson University Softball team finished with a split for the second straight day, falling in game one to St. John Fisher 6-3 but recovering for a 6-3 win in game two on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 13-7 on the season with the split while St. John Fisher pushed its mark to 6-7. Clarkson gets the weekend off before opening up the home portion of the schedule next Thursday when it hosts SUNY Potsdam in a doubleheader.

In game one, Liz Caggiano drove in all three runs for the Golden Knights, including herself twice, but the Knights could not muster enough offense around her to pull out the win. In the top of the first, Raeanna Dunn singled and moved up a base on a bunt before Caggiano drilled a home run to the opposite field to put the Knights up 2-0. In the bottom of the first, Julia Sortisio led off with a triple to right and came home a sacrifice fly by Rachel Evans to put the Cardinals back to within one.

Clarkson threatened in the third when Dunn opened the inning by reaching on an error and Danielle Whitham then put Dunn and herself in scoring position with a double, but Emily Trotman retired the next three hitters to escape the inning. Trotman also sent the Knights down in order in the fourth and fifth innings, allowing St. John Fisher to take the lead. Trotman led off the bottom half of the third with a walk and trotted home on an Evans two-run homer to center. In the bottom of the fifth, again Trotman got things going by singling and moving up on a steal and an Evans single, allowing Ashley Prince's fly ball to score her, making it 4-2.

Caggiano broke Trotman's string of nine straight hitters retired when she homered to lead off the sixth, this time depositing the ball over the left field fence. But Trotman set the next six Clarkson hitters down, and she helped her own cause in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double to put the game away.

Caggiano went 2-for-3 in the game with two homers and three runs batted in while Sam Mennig took her first loss of the season, allowing five hits and a walk for four earned runs in five innings of work. Trotman was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two more driven in at the dish and then tossed seven strong innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits while striking out three.

Game two began with the Knights putting up three runs in the top of the first and the Knights never lost the lead. Dunn led off the game by reaching when she was hit by a pitch and advanced around the bases on a steal, groundout and a Caggiano single to left-center. Michele Winn then homered to center to put Clarkson up 3-0. St. John Fisher picked up a run in the bottom of the first when Julia Sortisio doubled to right-center and then stole third, finally coming home on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Prince.

Clarkson got the run back in the top of the second as Danielle Whitham singled up the middle to score Olivia Zoeller, but the Cardinals cut the lead back to two in the bottom of the third when Marissa Kirker's groundout allowed Maddy Pepke to score after she had started the inning with a single and moved up two bases on a bunt single from Sortisio.

Things were quiet until the sixth when the two teams each picked up another run. Hannah Bowen scored on a bases loaded wild pitch to put the Knights up 5-2, but designated hitter Abby Flakus homered in the bottom half of the frame to again make it a two-run margin. Clarkson tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Sarah Vaccaro hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Rylee LeBourveau. The Cardinals put runners on in the seventh, beginning with a two-out walk from Ashley Pepke. Julia Sortisio then singled to bring the tying run to the plate, but Leah Allen induced a groundout to close out the game.

Allen finished with two strikeouts and seven hits allowed in her seven-inning effort, her fourth win of the year. Winn, Bowen and Zoeller each contributed two hits to the offense. For St. John Fisher, Sortisio was 4-for-4 and Pepke went 2-for-2 with a walk. Allison Rogowski took the loss, giving up eight hits and five earned runs in 5.2 innings.
