Clarkson Splits Doubleheader in Extras at Union

Schenectady, NY – Extra innings were needed for both games of the Clarkson University Softball team's doubleheader versus Union on Saturday, but the Golden Knights came up short of a sweep, winning game one 3-1 in eight innings and dropping game two 9-8 in 10 innings.

The Golden Knights moved to 14-8 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League while Union saw its record change to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in conference games. Clarkson heads to take on nationally-ranked Ithaca College on Sunday.

Olivia Zoeller of Clarkson and Dana Dolinko of Union locked up in a pitchers' duel in the first game as each allowed just a single run in the first seven innings. Clarkson picked up a run in the top of the first when Raeanna Dunn walked, stole second and then moved up on a ground out, allowing Liz Caggiano's sacrifice fly to score the graduate student. Union was quiet until the fifth as Kelsey Hartsoe reached on a walk and moved up on two ground outs. Dolinko then helped her own cause with a single to tie the game 1-1.

In the eighth, Clarkson would finally push another run across to take the lead after six scoreless frames. Dunn reached on a single and advanced to second on a throwing error, and Caggiano came through again with a single to left to make it 2-1. Michele Winn forced Caggiano out at second base and then moved up on a wild pitch, with freshman Kayla Robert doubling home Winn for a 3-1 Clarkson lead. Zoeller returned for the bottom of the eighth and retired the side on two ground outs and a fly out to end the game.

Zoeller finished with five strikeouts while allowing five hits and three walks in eight innings of work. Dolinko took the loss, giving up seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in eight innings. Sarah Vaccaro was 2-for-3 as the only Clarkson player with a multi-hit game. Dunn scored two runs and Caggiano drove in two.

While game one needed just one extra inning, the second contest went further, needing 10 frames to finish things off.  Unlike game one, neither team had much trouble scoring in the early going as each pushed four runs across in the first three innings. Caggiano drove home Dunn with a single in the top of the first for Clarkson's first run, but Union responded when Stuart Buxton raced home on a double steal. In the second inning, Dunn drove in a run on a bases loaded fielder's choice and Maddie Brink later scored on a wild pitch to put Clarkson up 3-1, but again the Dutchwomen responded in the bottom half of the inning. Julissa Malana drove in a run with a double and then came around herself on a Buxton single. Kim Puzo then added a third run-scoring hit in the inning as she plated Buxton with another single.

In the top of the third, Michele Winn led off with a double to center and scored on a two-out double by Kayla Robert, but that was all of the scoring for a while as neither team could break the tie in the next few innings. Clarkson appeared ready to walk away with a sweep when two run scored in the top of the seventh. Danielle Whitham doubled in Dunn and a sacrifice fly by Winn made it 6-4. A two-run single from Kayla Fisher in the bottom of the seventh, however, tied the game at 6-6. Kayla Robert scored in the top of the eighth to put the Knights back on top, but once again Union responded in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game back up at 7-7.

After nine innings, runners were placed in scoring position to start the 10th inning and Danielle Whitham was able to later score on a fielder's choice. However, Union started the bottom half of the inning with a double down the left field line to tie the game, immediately putting the Dutchwomen in a position to play for one with no one out and a runner in scoring position. A sacrifice bunt pushed Buxton to third and she came home on a single by Julia Boule to end the contest.

Five Clarkson players recorded multi-hit games in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Dunn scored twice and drove in two and Whitham and Robert each scored a pair of runs. Leah Allen took the loss, throwing 4.2 innings of relief after coming on in the fifth to relieve Sam Mennig, who also tossed 4.2 innings for the Knights.
