Clarkson Closes Out Florida Trip with Loss to UWL

Auburndale, FL – Crooked numbers in the middle innings were surrounded by zeros, but the Clarkson University Baseball team came up on the short in its final game in Florida, falling 6-4 against Wisconsin-Lacrosse on Friday morning.

The Golden Knights moved to 4-6 on the season, playing .500 ball in Florida with four wins and four losses. Clarkson will be off until next weekend when the team travels to face Vassar College.

The two teams were quiet for three innings, with neither team recording a hit in their first few times at bat. The Eagles then tossed a four-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Mitch Sutton singled home one run and Brennan Schmitt immediately followed with three-run home run to right to make it 4-0.

Clarkson responded with four runs in the top of the fifth, chipping away with a steady offense. Joe Stockman led off with a bunt single and Mike Tito then drew a one-out walk. Tommy Bianchi loaded the bases the hard way as he was hit by a pitch and Vincent Granuzzo followed with a single to left to put the Knights on the board. Mike Nee then singled to right to plate two more, and Caleb Doyle delivered an infield single to score another run.

Wisconsin-Lacrosse picked up the final two runs of the game in the bottom half of the fifth. Sutton drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a single and then Carson Youngquist forced in a run with a bases loaded hit by pitch. Clarkson threatened with runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings, but the Knights were unable to push another runner across.

Granuzzo was the lone player for the Knights to record two hits, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and another driven in. Mike Nee and Mike Tito each went 1-for-3, but both also reached base with two walks apiece. Mark Connor took the loss, going 4.1 innings, while Nate Burns tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
