Knights Fall Versus Ripon, 8-1

Auburndale, FL – Despite taking an early lead with a run in the third, the Clarkson University Baseball team was shut down for the remainder of the contest and dropped an 8-1 decision to Ripon College at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park.

Although the game was tied 1-1 through four innings, the Red Hawks scored two in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh inning to pull away late.

Clarkson got on the board first with a run in the top of the third as Joe Stockman began the rally with a one-out single. After another out was recorded, Tommy Bianchi and Vincent Granuzzo each singled to load the bases, setting up Mike Tito to draw a walk and force a run home.

Ripon picked up a run in the bottom half of the third as Jack Nelson led off the inning with a triple and then came home on a groundout from Jacob Pankratz. In the fifth, Nick Taranto hit a sac fly to plate Pankratz, who led off the inning with a double, and Nelson came around on a Riley Erickson double to put the Red Hawks up 3-1.

Ben Shpur came on in relief for the Golden Knights in the sixth and struck out the first two hitters he faced, but three straight hits by Ripon scored two runs for a 5-1 lead. In the next inning, Keegan Johnston drilled a two-run double and then scored on a triple by Nick Terrell to complete the scoring.

Bianchi finished 3-for-4, Burns was 2-for-5, and Granuzzo went 2-for-5 to lead the Clarkson offense. Those three accounted for seven of the nine hits that Clarkson accumulated, as Brian Brown went seven strong innings for the Red Hawks, striking out eight.
