Knights Split Versus D'Youville and Albright

Kissimmee, FL – A day after slogging through with a doubleheader sweep, the Clarkson University Softball team split against D'Youville College and Albright University, dropping the opener 8-4 and winning the nightcap 11-1.

The Spartans roared out of the gate with three runs in the top of the first while Clarkson picked up a run in the bottom of the first. Raeanna Dunn reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, finally completing the circuit on a sacrifice fly by Liz Caggiano.

Both teams were relatively quiet on offense in the second and third, but D'Youville tacked on two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth, placing the Spartans in a position to end the game early. However, the Knights picked up three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to pull back within four runs (8-4). All three of Clarkson's runs in the inning were unearned. Maddie Brink singled home Sarah Vaccaro, who had reached on an error to open the frame, while Raeanna Dunn's groundout plated Kayla Robert. Danielle Whitham also singled to center to score Brink.

Each of the teams put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but the score would settle at 8-4. Dunn finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and another driven in, but no other player would record multiple hits in the game as D'Youville starter Alexa Haberer pitched to contact well, giving up only six hits while striking out just two. Leah Allen took the loss for Clarkson, tossing 4.2 innings, and Sam Mennig allowed five hits with three whiffs in 2.1 innings of relief.

In game two, Clarkson earned its first run-rule win of the season thanks to a six-run fourth innings. The first two frames were quiet and Clarkson picked up a run in the top of the third on a single through the left side by Sarah Vaccaro, but it was the fourth where the Knights broke the game open with a six-spot.

Olivia Zoeller opened the winning with an infield single and Rylee LeBourveau also reached on an infield single. Raeanna Dunn walked to load the bases and the situation remained the same after Zoeller was erased on a fielder's choice. Liz Caggiano doubled to left-center to clear the bases and came around herself on a Michelle Winn double to right. Winn scored later on a wild pitch and a few batters later Kayla Robert doubled home Vaccaro.

In the fifth, three straight walks loaded the bases for Clarkson and Winn drove in a run with a fielder's choice, but Albright responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame. Three runs in the top of the sixth put the Knights up by 10 as Danielle Whitham's double scored two and Raeanna Dunn was singled home by Liz Caggiano.

Caggiano finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four more driven in. Winn went 2-for-5 with two runs driven in and Dunn reached base with a hit and three walks, scoring twice. Whitham also reached base four times with two hits and two walks, while Vaccaro and LeBourveau each notched two hits. Olivia Zoeller picked up her fourth win of the season, striking out five while scattering six hits and allowing just a single earned run in six frames.
