Knights Split on Final Day of Florida Trip

Clermont, FL – In its final day in the sunshine of Florida, the Clarkson University Softball team ended its trip with a split against a pair of SUNYAC squads, falling to SUNY Geneseo 7-3 in its opener and then coming from behind for a 4-2 victory over Buffalo State on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights finished their spring trip with a record of 9-3 in 12 games, moving to 11-5 overall on the season. Geneseo improved to 7-2 while Buffalo State dropped to 0-3. Clarkson is scheduled to face Oswego State and St. John Fisher in a pair of midweek doubleheaders next week.

In the opener against Geneseo, Clarkson fell behind in the early going by three runs, but scored three of its own in the bottom half of the second and third innings to tie the game up at 3-3. Geneseo scored one in the top of the first on a double from Danni Napoli and then in the second Brooke Wolff delivered a two-out double to score one before coming around herself on a hit from Alyssa Persich. C

Clarkson rallied in the bottom of the second thanks to a leadoff double by Michele Winn, who had to wait for a two-out single from Kayla Robert to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the third, Rylee LeBourveau opened with a walk, Raeanna Dunn reached on a bunt single, and Danielle Whitham plated LeBourveau with a single to center. Dunn then came home on a sacrifice fly by Liz Caggiano to even the score a three runs apiece.

Geneseo broke through in the sixth with a four-run inning to break the tie. Loading the bases with just one out, Geneseo picked up a two-run single from Wolff and another two-run single by Persich to put the score at 7-3.

Kayla Robert finished with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate to lead the Knights, while Olivia Zoeller took the loss, giving up six earned run in 5.1 innings of work, striking out three in that time. Sam Mennig completed the game with 1.2 innings of hitless relief, striking out two.

Just like its game against Geneseo, Clarkson found itself trailing after two innings against Buffalo State, but this time the Golden Knights halted the Bengals offense while scoring enough themselves to pick up the win.

In the top of the first, Buffalo State struck first when Julia Blujus reached on an error and then came all the way around on a sacrifice bunt thanks to a throwing error. In the second, the Bengals scored more conventionally, as Sydney McIntosh homered to left center to put Buff State up 2-0.

Clarkson got on the board in the bottom half of the second as Hannah Bowen reached with an infield single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kayla Robert blooped a single, but Bowen could not move to third on the hit. Alyssa Schaechinger walked to load the bases, allowing Maddie Brink's fly ball to centerfield to do damage, as the sacrifice fly sent Bowen home to make it 2-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Raeanna Dunn drove in a pair with a double to right-center, scoring pinch-runner Olivia Zoeller and Rylee LeBourveau, who had reached on a single. That hit put the Knights up 3-2, and Clarkson picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. LeBourveau doubled down the first base line and then scored on another Dunn hit, this time a single, to make it 4-2.

Sam Mennig picked up the win for the Knights, retiring 12 of the final 13 hitters she faced after allowing a leadoff double in the top of the fourth. She finished with six hits and no walks allowed with just a single earned run in seven innings, striking out four along the way. Dunn was 2-for-4 at the dish with three runs driven in and LeBourveau was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
