Knights Sweep Ursinus and Benedictine

Kissimmee, FL – Junior Leah Allen and freshman Olivia Zoeller each tossed complete games for the Clarkson University Softball team as the Golden Knights swept a doubleheader for the second straight day in Florida.

The Golden Knights received two solid performances from their starting pitchers, as Allen allowed just four hits and two walks in seven innings during a 2-1 win against Ursinus College and Zoeller scattered nine hits in seven innings in a 4-3 victory against Benedictine University. Clarkson faces Wesleyan University and Bowdoin College on Sunday afternoon.

In the first game of the day, Clarkson received all the scoring it would need in the bottom of the second inning. Liz Caggiano opened the frame with a walk but was erased on a fielder's choice. After a strikeout, Kayla Robert deposited the ball over the fence, driving home Kyrstin Messier to put Clarkson up 2-0. The Knights threatened with runners in scoring position in each of the next four innings, including a runner on third in both the fourth and fifth, but Clarkson was unable to push another run across.

Ursinus put pressure on the Knights in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally. Leah Allen struck out the first two hitters of the inning, but Callie Crouse singled and Gabrielle Manto walked to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Kayla Quinn delivered a run-scoring single, but she and Manto were stranded when Allen retired the final batter of the game on a fly out.

Allen finished with five strikeouts in seven innings, giving up four hits and two walks. Danielle Whitham led the Knights on offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.

In game two, the Knights struck first in their first at bat of the day as Raeanna Dunn and Danielle Whitham each reached on bunts. Liz Caggiano then singled to drive Dunn in and put the Knights up 1-0. Benedictine tallied three in the top of the third as Taylor Skraba doubled home a run and Elena Sakellaropou doubled in a pair to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Clarkson tied the game as Olivia Zoeller reached on a one-out double and then came home on a Rylee LeBourveau single. Dunn then singled to right to plate LeBourveau, tying the game at 3-3. Clarkson then scored what would prove to be the game-winner when Kayla Robert doubled in Kyrstin Messier in the sixth.

Dunn finished 3-for-4 in game two, giving her 17 hits on the year and placing her second all-time in that category at Clarkson (145 hits, five behind Jamie Bridge). Zoeller was 2-for-2 at the plate and struck out three with no walks over seven innings of work for her third victory of the season.
