Knights Split Versus Wesleyan and Bowdoin

Kissimmee, FL – On day three of the spring trip, the Clarkson University Softball team endured its first loss in Florida but rebounded with a win in game two to gain a split on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights lost to Wesleyan (CT) in the opener, 8-3, but came from behind to pick up a 6-5 victory over Bowdoin. Clarkson will now take a day off before returning to action on Tuesday when the team faces Manchester University and Thomas College.

Against Wesleyan, Clarkson scored in the first inning when Raeanna Dunn scored on a hit from Liz Caggiano, but the Cardinals sent eight runners around the circuit in the third inning. Only two of the eight runs by Wesleyan were earned due to early errors in the frame, but the Cardinals were unable to shorten the game with one more run in the fifth. Clarkson made sure things would go the distance with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh. Hannah Bowen led off the sixth with a triple and Kayla Robert singled her home for Clarkson's second run, and Danielle Whitham began the seventh with a leadoff hit, coming around on a double from Caggiano.

Both Caggiano and Robert each delivered two hits in game one. Leah Allen was saddled with the loss, allowing two earned runs in four innings while striking out six. Olivia Zoeller came on in relief in the fifth inning and did not allow a hit or a walk in two frames, striking out three.

In game two, Bowdoin scored four runs in the top of the first thanks to three extra-base hits, but starting pitcher Sam Mennig settled in after the rough start, allowing just a single run for the final six innings. Clarkson chipped away at the four run deficit, scoring twice in the bottom of the third and then one more in the bottom of the fourth. In the third, Raeanna Dunn began the rally with a two-out walk and Danielle Whitham followed with a double to send Dunn around the bases. Liz Caggiano was next with a single to plate Whitham, pulling the Knights to within two, 4-2. In the fourth, Rylee LeBourveau singled home Sarah Vaccaro to reduce the deficit to one.

Bowdoin responded with a run in the top of the fifth inning, but Clarkson scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to earn its first lead. Again, with two outs, LeBourveau got things started with a single and Dunn pushed her to second when she was hit by a pitch. Whitham singled home LeBourveau and Caggiano drove in the tying and go-ahead run with a double, making it 6-5. Olivia Zoeller came on in relief in the top of the seventh, striking out two and ending the game with a pop up to earn her first collegiate save.

Whitham, Caggiano, LeBourveau and Hannah Bowen each had two hits in the game, while Sam Mennig gained the win with six innings of work.
