Late Scoring Drought Allows RPI to Down Clarkson, 77-63

Troy, NY – A four-and-a-half minute scoreless stretch in the fourth quarter turned a tight game into a double-digit loss for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights dropped a 77-63 decision to Rensselaer in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-3 on the season and 0-2 in the Liberty League, while Rensselaer moved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league contests. Clarkson will look to get on the winning side in conference games when it closes out the first semester with a game against St. Lawrence University on Tuesday.

After pulling to within three on a Rachel Marion jumper at the 5:59 mark in the fourth quarter (62-59), the Knights went scoreless until the 1:29 mark. RPI took advantage, scoring seven points in that time frame to regain a double-digit advantage and Clarkson was unable to score again until the final minute as the Engineers hit free throws down the stretch for the win. Rensselaer limited second-chance opportunities for Clarkson in the fourth quarter, outrebounding the Knights 18-8, holding the Green and Gold to just one offensive board in the final 10 minutes.

At the opening, Clarkson held an early lead thanks to a Molly Stewart 3-pointer at 7:42, but the Engineers scored eight straight points. RPI held the lead until midway through the second period when Claire Flannery hit a jumper at 6:25, giving the Knights an 18-17 lead. RPI responded with a six-point streak and never trailed again. The Engineers pushed their lead to 12 points in the second quarter, but Clarkson rolled off six points to end the period to get back within six.

The third quarter mirrored the first and second periods, with the margin reaching close to double digits and occasionally falling to a single possession. Molly Stewart hit a 3-pointer near the midway point of the third period, making it 46-43, but RPI returned its advantage to as many as nine points in the period before a Lauren Bell layup made it 57-53 in the final minute. However, the Engineers converted three more points in the final 30 seconds lead by seven through 30 minutes.

In the fourth, Mariah Benavides buried a 3-pointer in the first minute and later on a Rachel Marion jumper drew Clarkson back to within three at 62-59. However, the Knights went 0-for-4 with a turnover in their next five possessions and RPI did just enough to extend its lead back to 10 (69-59). Stewart hit a free throw at 1:29 to end the scoring shortage, but the Knights were unable to score again until very late in the game on a three-point play from Lauren Bell, as RPI enjoyed a comfortable margin in the waning ticks of the clock.

Stewart finished with a near double-double on 19 points and nine rebounds, shooting 6-for-14 from the floor with three 3-pointers. Hannah Earl added 11 points while Bell had seven points and eight boards and Emma Buonanno chipped in five points and seven rebounds. For RPI, Celia Tomlinson scored 24 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and a 12-for-13 effort from the free throw line. She also contributed 14 rebounds and four blocks. Sam Krumbhaar added 24 points and nine rebounds, Courtney Lewis had 10 points, and heather Converse grabbed 10 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
