Hulbert Has 17 in Knights' Loss at RPI

Troy, NY – The shooting woes that hurt the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team in the second half on Friday carried over to Saturday's game at Rensselaer, as the Golden Knights got off to a slow start and could never recover in a 72-50 defeat against the Engineers.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in Liberty League contests while the Engineers improved to 5-2 and 2-0. Clarkson hosts Route 11 rival St. Lawrence University on Tuesday evening and will close out the first semester next Saturday at Utica College.

Clarkson took an early lead with free throws just 17 seconds into the game, but that was the last time that the Golden Knights would lead the contest. Chris Hulbert made a 3-pointer a few moments later, but the Knights opened the game by going 1-for-6 from the floor with five turnovers in the first six minutes. Matt Higgins seemingly ended the streak with a put back at the 13:59 mark, bringing the score to 11-8, but the Engineers went on an 18-1 run as the Knights could not buy a basket for more than eight minutes. Barryn Shark ended that long run without a field goal on a short jumper and Clarkson started to get things going in the final three minutes, but the Knights trailed by 20 at the break.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Clarkson again struggled from the floor, scoring only on a free throw and a jumper by Chris Hulbert in the first five minutes of the half, putting the Green and Gold down by 30. The team rallied over the next few ticks and cut the margin to 19 on two occasions midway through the half, but another small drought allowed the Engineers to squash any hopes of a Clarkson comeback.

Chris Hulbert finished with a team-best 17 points for Clarkson, shooting 7-for-16 from the floor. Dante Joefield came off the bench to produce eight points in only 12 minutes and Reese Swedberg snagged five rebounds to lead the Knights. Hulbert and Roburt Welch also recorded three steals apiece.

For RPI, four players finished in double figures. Will Rubin scored a team-high 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting and Kevin Davis was 4-for-5 from the floor for 12 points. Patrick Mahoney and Jonny Angbazo each tossed in 10 points for the Engineers while Dom Black put together a strong all-around effort with 6 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals.
