Hulbert Nails Seven 3-Pointers in Clarkson's Win Over SLU

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Chris Hulbert buried seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team held on for an 81-78 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence University Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-5 on the season and gained their first conference win of the season to move to 1-2 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence fell to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the league. Clarkson will close out the first semester with a non-league tilt on Saturday when the squad travels to face Utica College.

St. Lawrence committed 20 turnovers in the game while Clarkson had just seven. The Saints outrebounded the Knights 48-37 and also shot better from the floor (47.0% to 41.1%). Clarkson took advantage of the turnover margin, scoring 23 points off the Saints' 20 miscues.

The first half saw numerous ties and lead changes throughout as neither team could get much of a foothold to have momentum swing its way. That changed late in the half when Chris Hulbert buried a 3-pointer and both Roburt Welch and Reese Swedberg made short shots to put the Knights up by seven. A late 3-pointer by the Saints allowed the visitors to get back within four at the break.

In the second half, Clarkson started getting 3-pointers from many names and built an 11-point lead just a few minutes into the period. However, the margin was reduced to nothing as the Saints got 3-pointers from Luke Hicks and Andrew Geschickter, followed by a three-point play on a layup and free throw from Hicks and another make by Trent Adamson in the lane, tying the game at 53-53 at the 12:18 mark. The Knights quickly reclaimed the advantage and rebuilt the margin to 11 thanks to consecutive long-range shots by Hulbert, making it 70-59 with 6:37 remaining. Another 3-pointer just 30 seconds later from Roburt Welch made it appear as if the Knights would cruise down the stretch, but St. Lawrence employed a press which created turnovers and Clarkson struggled from the free throw line to create additional separation. The Saints chipped away and pulled to within two in the final minute, but Matt Higgins provided a bit more breathing room by making the front end of two free throws. At the other end of the floor, Clarkson put together a stifling defensive set which allowed just a single contested shot and the Knights secured the rebound to end the game.

Hulbert's previous collegiate high was 24 points, which he accomplished on two occasions, as he shot 7-for-14 from beyond the 3-point arc and 9-for-16 overall to produce his 29 points. Reese Swedberg notched a doubled-boule with 15 points and 16 rebounds while also finding his teammates on the perimeter for five assists. Matt Higgins was 3-for-5 from the arc and scored 12 points.

For St. Lawrence, Luke Hicks had a team-high 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Chris Jeffrey tossed in 11 points and also snagged 19 boards. Andrew Geschickter (16 points) and Trent Adamson (12 points) also finished in double figures.
