Clarkson Drops Liberty League Opener to Union, 74-57

Schenectady, NY – A 10-0 run by Union to end the first half provided the home team with plenty of momentum as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team suffered a 74-57 defeat against the Dutchmen on Friday night.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in Liberty League games while Union moved to 3-0 and 1-0. Clarkson takes on Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson opened the game with strong shooting, getting 3-pointesr from Reese Swedberg, Chris Hulbert and Joe Lucas in the first two and a half minutes. The Knights never relinquished the lead in the opening 20 minutes, expanding their advantage to as many as 14 points as Swedberg enjoyed an outstanding stretch. His jumper at 3:53 game Clarkson a 33-19 lead, but the Green and Gold went scoreless for the rest of the period thanks to four missed field goals and two turnovers. Union took advantage scoring the next 10 points to close the gap to four at the break.

Swedberg had a near double-double in the first half with 12 points and eight rebounds as Clarkson shot 7-for-15 from beyond the 3-point arc and Union was just 2-for-11 from distance in the first half.

Union changed its tact in the second half and went inside to make shots. The strategy was effective as the Dutchmen made seven of their first 10 attempts and Clarkson began to struggle from the perimeter. The Knights quickly found themselves down by double digits, making only one shot from the 3-point line in their first 12 attempts (closing at 2-for-16 in the second half). A pair of free throws near the eight-minute mark by Matt Higgins put Clarkson back within striking distance at 60-51, but the Knights were stuck at the latter number for three more minutes before finally scoring again. By then the gap was too much to overcome.

Swedberg closed with 16 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the field, 10 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the Golden Knights. Chris Hulbert tossed in nine points for the Knights and Barryn Shark picked up six assists. For Union, Brian Noone scored 19 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and an 8-for-11 effort from the free throw line to go along with 11 rebounds. Andrew Laub was the beneficiary of the change in game plan by the Dutchmen, scoring 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. He also matched Noone with 11 rebounds.
