Knights Fall to Potsdam, 90-75

Potsdam, NY – Tossing in 55 first-half points, SUNY Potsdam produced a double-digit first-half lead against the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team and never looked back as the Golden Knights dropped a 90-75 decision to the Bears Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-3 on the season while the Bears improved to 4-1 through five games. The Green and Gold will be off for the next 10 days, opening Liberty League play next weekend against Union College and Rensselaer.

Potsdam shot 19-for-34 in the first half, making all six of its 3-point field goal attempts, with a 21-13 rebounding margin while limiting themselves to just four turnovers.

Clarkson held its only lead of the game after a Matt Higgins 3-pointer in the early minutes, and the Bears had little trouble scoring against the Golden Knights defense, getting to the basket for short shots and earning plenty of second chances on offense rebounds. Every time Clarkson got close, Potsdam responded with a spurt to push the advantage back to a more reasonable advantage. Roburt Welch hit a 3-pointer at 15:11 to draw the Knights within two, but Potsdam went on a 7-0 run. Later in the half another 3-pointer put Clarkson down by just six, but a 7-0 run by the Bears increased the margin to double digits. The Knights would trail by double figures for the rest of the half.

In the second half, each team's offense stalled somewhat compared to the first, as Potsdam shot just 40.6% in the final 20 minutes (compared to 54.3% in the first half). Clarkson's make rate dropped only slightly, but the Knights committed 14 second-half turnovers, including two offensive fouls that eliminated Barryn Shark and Matt Higgins from the game due to foul issues. Clarkson twice got within 11 in the second half, but again Potsdam had answers in the paint and the Bears ended with a 15-point margin of victory.

Chris Hulbert scored 22 points for Clarkson, making five 3-point field goals. Reese Swedberg ended up just short of a double-double on 15 points and eight rebounds and Matt Higgins tossed in 11 points. Freshman Ryan Miles-Ferguson got his first extended look of the season and played well with 10 points on 3-for-5 shooting as well as three assists in 25 minutes.

For Potsdam, Jayquan Thomas dropped in 26 points, shooting 10-for-14 from the floor in 25 minutes despite foul trouble. Danny Delsol-Lowry also scored 17 points and freshman Tyrese Baptiste notched a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds while also picking up four steals.
