Sophomores Swedberg and Hulbert Score 50 Combined in Narrow Loss to Oswego

Potsdam, NY – Shooting 71.4% in the second half, Oswego State scored 54 points in the final 20 minutes to come from behind for a win over the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, 80-72, in a non-league game Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 2-2 overall and will now be off for seven days, next playing SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday just before Thanksgiving. Oswego State improved to 3-0.

The first half was a bit more defensive-minded than expected since Oswego came in averaging close to 90 points per game in its first two contests. Clarkson did a good job of limiting second chances and also making sure that chances near the rim were well-defended. Each team had just one make in the first four minutes, and in the next handful of minutes the Lakers started getting into foul trouble with a pair of starters going to the bench. Clarkson took advantage, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Roburt Welch midway through the half to take a 19-14 lead. Oswego came back to tie the game twice in the first half, but Chris Hulbert buried a 3-pointer with a minute remaining to put Clarkson up by five at the break (31-26).

The second was an entirely different story for both teams, as the Knights and Lakers combined for 95 points. Oswego shot 20-for-28 from the floor with five 3-pointer in the second half, getting into the paint and backing down Clarkson's guards. If the shot wasn't there, the Lakers delivered solid passes in close quarters for layups and short jumpers. Clarkson combated that style with an increased offense of its own. Hulbert made tough shots from the perimeter and Reese Swedberg dazzled on the interior with excellent base line moves and put backs, scoring 20 of his 26 points in the final 20 minutes.

The Knights were up by nine in the opening minute of the second half, but Oswego chipped away, tying the game at 40-40 and then taking the lead on a layup and one by Joe Sullivan at the 13:48 mark. Oswego used that make to go on a small run (13-2) over the course of five minutes, pushing its lead to 53-46. Clarkson came right back, reclaiming the lead on free throws from Swedberg at 7:31 to make it 59-57, and again 80 seconds later when Blake Gearhart buried a 3-pointer for a 62-60 Clarkson advantage. The two teams went back and forth with several more ties, but the biggest play of the game may have come on a broken play. With the shot clock set to expire, Kaleb Cook flung up a 3-pointer and the ball swished through to give the Lakers a 72-69 lead at 3:03. Oswego would never trail again and closed out with an eight-point win.

Sophomores Reese Swedberg and Chris Hulbert combined for 50 points, with Swedberg scoring a career-high 26 points and Hulbert tying his career-high with 24 points. Swedberg shot 12-for-15 from the floor and added 12 boards while Hulbert buried six 3-pointers. Senior Barryn Shark also had five rebounds and six assists.

For Oswego, Joe Sullivan tossed in 25 points in just 23 minutes, due to foul trouble, and Kaleb Cook went 8-for-11 from the field for 20 points in only 23 minutes off the bench. Liam Sanborn was 6-for-11 from the field for 13 points.
