Knights Fall 2-0 in Midweek Game at SLU

Canton, NY - A first-minute goal put the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team in an early hole as the Golden Knights dropped a 2-0 Liberty League decision to St. Lawrence University Tuesday afternoon at MacAllaster Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 9-7-1 overall and 2-6-0 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence moved to 11-3-0 and 6-2-0. The Green and Gold will conclude the regular-season on Saturday afternoon at Union College.

Clarkson began the game with the opening kickoff but the Saints quickly gained control in their own defensive end. A pass to Julia Mulhern cleared the center line and the Golden Knights quickly found themselves on their heels racing back in a 3-on-2. St. Lawrence took advantage as Mulhern crossed the ball to Emily Wade near the six and she buried a shot just 23 seconds into the game to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

The Knights recovered to put pressure on St. Lawrence, but all four of their shots on goal in the first half were from a safe distance. Giulia Mahoney tried for the opposite post from about 15 yards out after beating a trio of St. Lawrence defenders in the 12th minute and Megan Murphy ripped attempts from about 30 yards out that were corraled by SLU goalkeeper Samantha Allen. Late in the half Mahoney took another chance with a chip shot from about 25 yards out, but Allen tipped the ball away to keep Clarkson scoreless.

In the second half, the Knights had a solid opportunity in the 58th minute. After a foul was called on the Saints just outside the penalty area, Clarkson was awarded a free kick, but Alicia Bushey's attempt sailed over the goal as the score remained 1-0. Just a few moments later St. Lawrence picked up an insurance goal when Lauren Arthaud collected a rebound near the top of the box and sent a floater into the top corner at the 61:15 mark.

St. Lawrence finished with a 16-9 edge in shots but a more modest 8-5 lead in shots on goal. Clarkson held the advantage in corner kicks by one, 7-6. Emma Timerman made six saves for Clarkson and Allen stopped five shots for St. Lawrence.
