Pearson Records Six Hits But Knights Drop Second Doubleheader to Union

Amsterdam, NY – Given extra chances thanks to six errors, Union College pounded out 32 hits in its doubleheader sweep of the Clarkson University Baseball team as the Golden Knights fell 6-3 in the opener and 17-4 in the nightcap on Sunday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-9 overall and started the conference slate 0-4. Union moved to 12-4 overall and 6-2 in league games. Clarkson is schedule for seven games in the next week, beginning with a nine-inning contest against Plattsburgh State on Tuesday at Jack Phillips Stadium.

In the opener, Union and Clarkson traded runs in the first inning as Colin Kelly delivered a one-out double to plate Jack Koch for the Dutchmen, and a bases loaded sacrifice fly from Mike Krick evened the game at 1-1 for the Knights. Union picked up another run in the top of the second when Andy Labeck scored on an error, but Clarkson picked up two in the bottom half of the third as Ben Knauf and Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra delivered back-to-back two-out singles to give the Knights a 3-2 advantage. Union evened the game in the top of the fourth as Harrison Glatt started a late rally with a two-out double and came home on a single from Joe Ganim. Labeck then homered in the sixth to put Union up 5-3 and Sam Kirschenbaum singled home Colin Kelly in the seventh for the final run.

Eric Beer picked up the in relief for Union, throwing three scoreless frames with just one hit and one walk allowed. Ryan Riley took the loss for Clarkson, whiffing seven with just one walk in seven innings, but allowing four earned runs (six overall) on 12 hits.

The hitter's haven that is Shuttleworth Park saw Union take advantage of the short fences with four home runs, including three in the first two innings. Colin Kelly hit a three-run homer in the first and was followed by Andy Labeck with a solo homer. Though Clarkson would respond with two in the bottom of the first on run-scoring hits from Ben Knauf and Brad Pearson, two straight errors allowed Labeck to connect for a three-run homer (all unearned runs) in the top of the second to make the score 8-2. Kelly added a solo homer in the fourth for Union, but Brad Pearson drove in his third run of the game for Clarkson with a solo homer in the fifth. That run, however, was the last that the Knights would score. Union appeared to be pretty much finished on offense as well, scoring just once from the fifth to the eighth innings, but the Dutchmen scored five unearned runs (seven total) in the top of the ninth to make game two more lopsided.

Pearson highlighted Clarkson's offense for the day, connecting for six hits in eight at bats over the two contests.
