Alfred Sweeps Knights, 14-6 and 4-0

Alfred, NY – Jessica Wilcox tossed eight scoreless innings to earn both wins as Alfred University swept a doubleheader against the Clarkson University Softball team, 14-6 and 4-0, on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-14-1 on the season and are scheduled to face crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday afternoon. Alfred improved to 12-6 on the season with its second doubleheader sweep in the last three days.

In the opener, Clarkson started off strong with four runs in the first two innings, but Alfred scored at least one run in each of its last five frames. Hannah Bowen and Summer Lancette began the first inning with back-to-back doubles to put the Knights up 1-0 early and Lancette scored on a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Bowen tripled home Danielle Whitham and then came home herself on a sacrifice fly from Lancette to give the Knights a 4-0 edge.

The Saxons then began to open things offensively with an unearned run in the bottom of the second and a three-run homer from Desiree Luquin in the bottom half of the third. The fourth was the difference maker for the Saxons, however, as Alfred pushed across six runs, including a key three-run double from Lea Georgatos. After plating another run in the bottom of the fifth, Clarkson responded with a solo homer from Michele Winn to make it 11-5 and Kyrstin Messier singled home Kat Plescow to reduce the deficit to five, but the Saxons got the three runs back in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via run rule.

Bowen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Knights and Lancette was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs driven in. Luquin finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three more RBI while Lu Krawczyk went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Jessica Wilcox came on in relief in the third and pitched three hitless frames to gain the win.

Wilcox started game two for the Saxons and tossed five more scoreless innings to pick up her second win of the day, but Clarkson threatened several times. The Knights had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the first, runners on first and third with one down in the top of the second, and runners on first and second with one out in the fifth, but Clarkson could never push any runs across. Lu Krawczyk scored on an error in the first for Alfred and Becca Alexander plated one in the next inning with another run coming home on an error to give the Saxons a 3-0 lead. The Saxons nearly broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth when Lea Georgatos delivered an infield single to score one run, but despite the no outs, bases loaded-situation, Clarkson was able to wiggle out of the danger. However, the Knights couldn't pick up a run in their last two trips to the plate and Alfred ended the game with a 6-4-3 double play.

Maggie Stark took the loss for the Knights in game two, but pitched well, allowing just two earned runs in six innings. Lancette was 2-for-4 at the plate and Messier also had two hits in three at bats. Wilcox notched the win with four strikeouts in five innings. Both Krawczyk and Alexander had two hits in game two for the Saxons.
