Clarkson Drops Pair at Salisbury Softball Tournament

Salisbury, MD – Freshman Hannah Bowen recorded four hits over the course of two games and Liz Caggiano homered, but the Clarkson University Softball team couldn't pick up a win on day two of the Salisbury University Softball Tournament.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-4 on the season with losses to Washington College (5-4) and Salisbury (9-0). Clarkson will have to wait until it travels to Florida to pick up the first win of the 2018 season.

In Sunday's opener against Washington College, the Golden Knights fell behind by four runs through the first five innings as the Shorewomen methodically put up runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings. Gabrielle Edwards doubled home Regan Horan in the second and plated Horan again in the fourth on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. In the fifth, Horan doubled to left center to send Grace Moery home with the Shorewomen's third run, and Horan came around when Alli Saul followed with another double to the same spot.

Clarkson ended its 15-inning scoreless streak in the top of the sixth when Liz Caggiano launched a solo home run to left center, making the score 4-1. Washington responded with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Knights wouldn't go away quietly in the bottom half of the frame. Hannah Bowen singled home Maggie Stark and was sent around the bases along with Karlie Neuhausser on a two-run single from Bridget Woolley. Woolley couldn't complete the circuit, however, as the Knights finished down a run in the first game.

Bowen went 2-for-3 and Caggiano matched the effort for the Knights. Leah Allen took the loss, allowing two earned run in five innings. Horan went 3-for-3 with four runs scored for the Shorewomen.

The second game saw Clarkson pick up two hits in the top of the first inning with singles by Bowen and Woolley, but that was half of the Knights offensive output in the game and Clarkson would never pose the same kind of threat on the base paths. Salisbury scored a run in the bottom half of the first when Dakotah Fraley scored from second base on a wild pitch. Two innings later, Fraley produced an RBI double and scored herself when Annie Pietanza doubled her home. In the bottom of the fourth, Salisbury picked up five runs thanks to three doubles. Fraley delivered a two-run double and then scored on another two-bagger by Pietanza, and Kristen Yanarella plated two more with the third double of the inning.

Bowen finished 2-for-3 in game two for Clarkson, while Kyrstin Messier and Woolley accounted for Clarkson's other hits, with each going 1-for-2. Sam Mennig picked up the loss, but struck out four in 3.1 innings. For Salisbury, Shannon Powell scattered four hits and a walk while whiffing six in five innings. Fraley and Pietanza each went 3-for-3 and Yanarella was 2-for-2 for the Gulls, and the trio combined for eight runs batted in and five runs scored.
