Knights Drop Season-Opening Doubleheader in Salisbury

Salisbury, MD – Inhospitable road conditions caused a depleted roster to be weakened further after a long and arduous road trip to Southern Maryland as the Clarkson University Softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell 12-0 to host Salisbury University in the team's season-opener, and Clarkson followed with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Washington College in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

In the opener versus the Gulls, Clarkson collected five hits and five walks against Alexis Layton, but the Knights were unable to push any runs across against the sophomore hurler. Salisbury did not suffer from such issues, scoring in each of the five frames before the game was shortened due to the run rule. Kristen Yanarella delivered an RBI-double in the first and scored on a throwing error to give Salisbury a 2-0 lead and the Gulls tacked on another run in the second inning on a two-out triple from LeAnne Collins that plated Sami Mumford. The third and fourth innings saw Emily Allen drive in a combined six runs, plating four on a grand slam in the third and two more on a double in the fourth. During the fifth inning, Dakotah Fraley hit a two-run homer and her shot was immediately followed with a solo homer from Annie Pietanza.

Liz Caggiano went 2-for-3 for the Knights and Danielle Whitham was 2-for-2. Michele Winn reached twice on walks. Leah Allen took the loss, tossing three innings and allowing eight runs (six earned). Sam Mennig struck out three in two innings of relief, allowing four earned runs.

Things began quietly in game two as both teams went down quietly in the first two frames. However, Washington College erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the third as seven straight batters reached base, including six hits. The bottom of the fourth all but ended the game when Rachel Butler delivered a two-run homer to put the Shorewomen up 9-0. Clarkson put a little pressure on Washington in the top of the fifth, but the Knights couldn't circle the bases to keep the game going.

Hannah Isaacson and Hannah Bowen each recorded infield singles for the Knights. Maggie Stark was saddled with the loss, going four innings and striking out one.
