Clarkson Hits Season-High in Goals in 13-8 Win Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – A four-goal outburst in the first 7:19 of the opening period gave the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team a lead it would never relinquish as the Golden Knights claimed a 13-8 victory over crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights edged back over .500, improving to 4-3 at the midway point of the 2018 season. Clarkson will host Union College at 12:00 noon on Saturday. SUNY Potsdam dropped to 2-4 on the season.

Despite the quick four quick goals by the Knights, the Bears didn't fall apart in the early going and pulled within one by the end of the quarter. Clarkson was called for two penalties and the Bears took advantage, notching two man-up goals in the last three minutes of the first period.

The Golden Knights recovered from their missteps late in the first quarter and dominated the second frame, tallying four times to reclaim a solid advantage. Clarkson scored twice in the final four minutes to push its lead to five, including a fastbreak goal by Conor Bartlett at 3:17 and a ripped shot from Marcus Lavarnway with 1:17 to go.

Though Mark Uhlig would score just 30 seconds into the third quarter to put the Green and Gold up 9-3, the Knights' offense went quiet despite a long stretch with possession. Potsdam appeared to have a significant opportunity when Tayte Murray scored at the 7:36 mark and the Knights were whistled for a slash. Only a few seconds later, another slash was called against Clarkson and the Green and Gold were down two players. However, Colin Holt made two point-blank saves to kill off the penalty and the Bears wouldn't come through with another goal until more than six minutes later.

Potsdam pulled to within three just a minute into the fourth, but about 90 seconds later Uhlig ripped a shot from the point past Bears' goalkeeper Zach Sheridan and shortly thereafter Pierce Currie muscled in a shot from the middle to give Clarkson an 11-6 lead. That margin was increased to six after another Bartlett score, and though Potsdam got two goals only 83 seconds apart from Eric Soderquist, the deficit was too much to overcome for the Bears.

Bartlett enjoyed his best offensive day of the year, scoring four goals and assisting on one other goal for five points. Uhlig produced his best numbers of the season as well, setting a career-high with five points on three goals and two assists. Marcus Lavarnway and Pierce Currie each contributed three points on two goals and an assist apiece, while Sam Groves and Shane Kilday did likewise, just with one goal and two assists each. Mathew Milne was busy helping the Knights gain possession for the second straight game, notching eight groundballs. Colin Holt made nine stops in the crease for the Knights.

For Potsdam, Zach Sheridan saw plenty of action as Clarkson's offense took 52 shots against the goalkeeper, with Sheridan denying 19 of the 32 that were on goal. Soderquist scored three goals to lead the Bears.

Clarkson held advantages in shots (52-28), shots on goal (32-17), groundballs (38-30) and caused turnovers (12-3). The Knights won 14 of the 25 faceoffs. Clarkson also gave the Bears fits in their defensive end, allowing Potsdam to be successful on only eight of its 18 clear attempts.
