Union Holds Off Knights in Conference Duel, 12-10

Potsdam, NY – Two goals just eight seconds apart in the second quarter allowed Union College to regain the lead against the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team and the Dutchmen never looked back, holding on for a 12-10 Liberty League win over the Golden Knights Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights saw their overall record evened at 4-4 while the team dropped to 1-2 in conference games. Union improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in league contests.

The Dutchmen burst out the gates with two goals in the first minute and a 3-0 lead in the with just a little over four minutes off the clock, but Clarkson responded with three straight goals of its own to tie the game up at 3-3. At the start of the second, Conor Bartlett found Sam Groves to give the Knights the lead at the 11:07 mark. However, Union took advantage of a penalty midway through the quarter, scoring with the extra man and tallying again just eight seconds after the ensuing face off.

Clarkson went nearly 17 minutes without a goal, but early in the third quarter Shane Kilday converted to get the Knights back within two (7-5). Union had a quick response with a goal only 19 seconds later and edged out to a four-goal lead 84 ticks later. Down the stretch of the third, a Pierce Currie goal pulled Clarkson within two, but once again the Dutchmen had a response with a goal only six seconds later. That goal by Alex Newhouse right off the face off proved key as the Knights could never get closer than two for the remainder of the game.

The Knights held an advantage in shots in each of the four quarters and finished with a 39-28 lead in that category. Conor Bartlett had a team-best five points on three goals and two assists, while Shane Kilday chipped in three points on two goals and an assist. Both Sam Groves and Pierce Currie also notched two goals. Colin Holt made eight saves and scooped up five groundballs in the Clarkson crease. Both Trevor Borchardt and Michael Nourse each caused two turnovers.

For Union, Alex Newhouse went 13-for-21 on faceoffs with six groundballs and added two points. Sean Patterson scored three times, John Edmonds tallied three points on two goals and an assist and Jordan Cooper recorded three points with a goal and two assists. Sam Bebout denied 12 stops for the Dutchmen.
