Knights Done In By Long-Range Prowess of Lakers

Oswego, NY – Taking a pair out of the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team's recent playbook, Oswego State took to the perimeter and banged home 15 3-pointers in the first 30 minutes of Tuesday evening's contest, defeating the Golden Knights 80-60 in non-league action.

The Golden Knights dropped to 0-4 on the season and will look to get on track next Tuesday following the holiday weekend at SUNY Potsdam. Oswego State improved to 3-0.

The Lakers finished with 17 3-point field goals in the game, producing 63.8% of their scoring from beyond the arc with a success rate of 48.6% (17-for-35). Oswego shot 49.2% overall (29-for-59) while Clarkson was 19-for-51 (37.3%).

It appeared as if Clarkson would recover from its weekend shooting slump in the early going as the Knights tossed in eight points with a pair of 3-pointers from Matthew Hornak and Roburt Welch in the first four minutes, but the 8-7 lead after Welch's 3-pointer was the last time that the Knights would hold the advantage and a free throw from Welch which made it 9-9 about a half minute later was the last the two teams would be tied. Oswego seemed incapable of missing from the perimeter for most of the first half, making nine 3-point field goals overall, and rattling home several near the midway point of the half to go on a 17-2 run for a 26-11 lead. A 3-pointer from Jason Phelps and another from Welch pulled Clarkson to within single digits at the 6:53 mark (29-20), but Oswego capped off the half in fitting fashion with a Quinn Carey 3-pointer on the Lakers' final possession.

The Lakers extended to a 20-point lead when Carey converted a four-point play at the 18:30 mark and Oswego would not look back. Chris Hulbert made a layup at the 13:08 mark to cut the margin to 16 (57-41), but the Knights would go silent on offense for the next four minutes, finally converting on another layup from Matt Higgins at 8:53. However, that only cut the spread to 21 points (64-43) and the Lakers would hold a comfortable advantage for the remainder of the game.

Junior Matt Higgins broke out of a shooting slump by going 8-for-15 from the floor for a team-best 19 points to lead the Knights. Roburt Welch added 10 points and freshman Reese Swedberg was just short of a double-double on 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Quinn Carey took all of his shots from beyond the 3-point arc, going 7-for-13 from the field to score 22 points for the Lakers. Joe Sullivan added 13 points, Tim Marshall scored 12 points, and Julien Crittendon tossed in 10 points for Oswego. Liam Sanborn took advantage of his teammates' hot shooting with 11 assists.
