Hulbert and Higgins Combine for 41 Points in Loss at Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Chris Hulbert poured in 23 points on 7-for-11 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc but his efforts were not enough for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team on Tuesday night, as the Golden Knights dropped a 77-66 decision to SUNY Potsdam at Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-5 overall on the season, but the important part of the campaign begins this weekend when the team hosts Rensselaer and Skidmore College, a pair of Liberty League foes. Potsdam moved to 2-3.

For the first four minutes of the game, Clarkson seemed to be in a bit of a trance as Potsdam popped in 15 points by the 16:49 mark, including 13 in the first 155 seconds of the contest. The Golden Knights finally got on the scoreboard at the 15:35 mark on a Matt Higgins jumper, but it did little to get the Green and Gold going as Potsdam extended its advantage to 18 points at 20-2. From that point on, however, the Knights methodically got back into the contest, thanks in large part to the play of Chris Hulbert.

Hulbert buried a 3-pointer at the 10:00 mark, then came down on the next possession to make another, and only 23 seconds later he hit his third long-range shot in just 1:09 to get Clarkson back within eight (27-19) with 8:51 to go. Two more free throws from Hulbert a few moments later got the Knights to within striking distance and Clarkson totally erased the early scoring by Potsdam with less than four minutes to play. Reese Swedberg went to the basket for a layup at 3:55 to get Clarkson within one (34-33) and two more free throws at 3:19 put the Knights up by one. Those were the last points of the half for Clarkson as Dante Langley hit his fourth 3-pointer of the half with 51 seconds left and Dante Viskovich nailed another 3-pointer in the final seconds to put Potsdam up by five at the break.

Hulbert had 14 points thanks to four 3-pointers and Higgins tossed in 10 points to lead the Knights at the break. Dante Langley was virtually unstoppable for the Bears in the first 20 minutes, shooting 8-for-11 overall with four 3-pointers for 21 points.

Although the Knights threatened in the second half, they could never get enough stops on the defensive end to regain the lead. The team trailed by two early in the half and then by four a few other times, including a 49-45 deficit at 14:28, but Potsdam went inside to Kristoff Saunders and Serigne Kane to build a 12-point advantage (59-47) just a few minutes later. Two quick baskets by Matt Higgins got Clarkson back within eight, but again the Bears were able to extend the lead to 12. It appeared as if the Knights were on their way on two other occasions as well, thanks to a pair of freshmen. Reese Swedberg drove through traffic for a lay in at 5:43 to make it 64-60, but Potsdam scored five straight to get the lead back to nine. Then, Chris Hulbert hit a 3-pointer from the wing at the 2:48 mark to bring the score to 70-66. However, Clarkson would not score again and the Bears hit just enough free throws down the stretch to gain the double-digit win.

Hulbert finished with a team-high 23 points while Higgins closed with 18 points. Malaquias Canery also chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Knights, while Swedberg added six points and seven rebounds for Clarkson.

For Potsdam, Langley cooled off in the second half but still finished with 24 points and eight rebounds. Kane added 17 points and six rebounds and Saunders added 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting.
