Clarkson Outlasts Union to Move to Championship Round

After 12 innings, the Clarkson University Baseball team kept its season alive with a 6-4 win over Union on Friday afternoon in Rochester.

Clarkson is now 18-17 on the season and will face RIT in the championship round of the Liberty League playoffs. It is the seventh time in 15 years that the Golden Knights have reached the final round.

Clarkson and Union each scored a run in the third inning. In Clarkson's half, Joe Stockman was hit by a pitch and then a Union throwing error on the next batter puts runners on first and third with one out. Chris Miller then singled through the left side to bring home a run. The Dutchmen got a baserunner to start the third when Sean Cullen singled. Cullen moved to third on consecutive Union outs. Anthony Amoroso came up with a two out RBI single to tie the game.

Union took the lead with one run in the fifth. The Dutchmen slapped three consecutive singles with two outs on the board to load the bases. Jake Vesling then singled through the right side to score one run. However, when a second baserunner tried to come around to score, Miller was able to throw him out from right field.

Clarkson regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Ben Knauf reached on an infield single and then a throwing error on Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra's sacrifice bunt allowed Knauf to move to third and Ruiz-Sierra to reach base. While a double play on the next batter erased Ruiz-Sierra from the base paths, it did bring Knauf home to score. Mike Messier walked to give Clarkson a base runner once again and then Miller singled to put runners on the corners. Brad Pearson turned a pitch around for a single up the middle to score Messier and give Clarkson a 3-2 lead. That lead was extended one batter later when Dom Pirro's single to left field scored Miller from second base.

Union answered though with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. A walk and a single gave Union two men on base with one out, but a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs. Vesling was fine batting with two outs as he singled to left field to score a run. The game was then tied on Kent Curran's single to right field.

After the seventh, the two teams matched zeroes on the scoreboard for four straight innings. Union had its best chance to win in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run on second base before Clarkson could record an out, but the Green and Gold got out of the jam to send the game to extra innings. Clarkson then had a great chance to take the lead in the top of the eleventh, but a ground out meant the Golden Knights left the bases loaded.

Clarkson finally broke through with two runs in the top of the twelfth. Pirro singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A ground out moved Pirro up to third, but a pop up on the next batter meant Clarkson had only one out left to bring Pirro home. It was Knauf who came through with the timely hit as his single through the left side scored Pirro to break the deadlock. Knauf moved himself into scoring position by stealing second and moving to third on a Union throwing error. Another Union error allowed Ruiz-Sierra to reach base and Knauf to score an insurance run.

Union put one runner on base in the bottom of the twelfth, but could not move him any further to end the game.

Mike Bubniak started the game for Clarkson and he pitched four and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Mark Connor was the first reliever for Clarkson and he allowed two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. Nate Burns got two outs and allowed two runs and zero runs. Ryan Riley then closed the game with five shutout innings, allowing just three hits to go with five strikeouts to earn the win.

Pirro was 3-5 on the day, while Miller, Pearson, and Knauf all had a pair of hits. The quartet each had an RBI in the win as well.

Clarkson will play host RIT at 5:15 on Friday night with a win needed to keep the season alive.
