Clarkson Falls to RIT in Liberty League Championship

An early 6-0 hole was too much for the Clarkson University Baseball team to recover from as the Golden Knights fell to 25th ranked RIT 9-4 on Friday night in the Liberty League Championship.

Clarkson closes out its season with an 18-18 record. The Golden Knights reached the championship round of the Liberty League playoffs for the seventh time in the last 15 seasons.

Coming off a twelve inning marathon against Union to advance to the championship round, the Green and Gold fell behind 6-0 after three innings of play. RIT opened the second with a double and a single to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, a single brought home one run, but then a fly out added the second out of the inning. Unfortunately for Clarkson, the next batter doubled to right field to score two runs.
In the third, RIT once again opened the inning with a single and a double. A sacrifice fly brought home one run and then Mike Myers cleared the bases with a home run to right field.

Clarkson got one run back in the fifth when Chris Miller launched a home run to right field to make the score 6-1. However in the sixth, the Tigers added two more runs on a run scoring double and a single, both coming with two outs. RIT added one more run in the bottom of the eighth when Will Gorman doubled for his fourth hit of the day.

The Golden Knights staged a late rally in the top of the ninth. With one out, Miller was hit by a pitch and then Jon Schwartz followed with a single. Dom Pirro added a single to load the bases and a Brad Pearson sacrifice fly brought a run home to score. After Pirro stole second base, Connor Dietrich singled to left field to score two more runs. That was it for Clarkson though, as the game ended with a ground out on the next batter.

Rory Corcoran started the game for Clarkson and he threw two and a third innings. Corcoran finished with a line of six runs allowed on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Nate Burns threw 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Ethan Kornbrek allowed just two hits in 1.1 innings and Pirro got the final three outs, allowing one run on two hits.

Pirro led Clarkson with four hits in five at bats while Miller had two hits of his own, including Clarkson's only extra base hit.
