Clarkson Opens Liberty League Playoffs with 5-3 Loss to Union

With 10 men left on base, the Clarkson University Baseball team fell to Union 5-3 in the first game of the Liberty League Tournament on Thursday afternoon in Rochester.

Clarkson is now 16-17 on the season and will play in the 4:00 pm game on Thursday afternoon. The Golden Knights will take on the loser of the other RIT against Vassar semifinal.

Clarkson threatened to score in the top of the first inning when a Brad Pearson walk and singles by Dom Pirro and Joe Fraser loaded the bases with just one out. But two strikeouts ended the rally without any runs scoring.

Union started its own rally in the bottom of the first when Anthony Amoroso doubled down the right field line with one out. After a groundout moved Amoroso to third base, Kent Curran singled through the right side to score Amoroso. Curran was followed by Sean Cullen who doubled to right field to put runners on second and third. Joe Ganim then hit an infield single to score Curran for Union's second run of the inning. Clarkson was finally able to get out of the inning when Ganim was picked off at first base.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Chris Miller started the inning with a double to right field and then Pearson singled to right center to send him to third base. Miller came home to score when Pirro singled through the right side. A pickoff followed by two groundouts meant Clarkson had to settle for just one run in the frame.

Union regained some breathing room in the fourth when Ganim's double and a single by Colin Kelly each scored a run.

Clarkson got one run back in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Pearson worked a one out walk and then a Union error allowed Pirro to reach base and Pearson to move to third. A failed pickoff attempt brought Pearson home to score. After a fly out, a Cam Bando walk and a Ben Knauf singled loaded the bases for Clarkson, but a groundout ended the threat. In the sixth, Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra started the inning with a walk and then moved to second and third on a wild pitch and a Mike Messier sacrifice bunt respectively. Miller then doubled down the left field line to score Ruiz-Sierra. After a Clarkson out, Miller moved up to third base on a Union balk and was just 90 feet away from tying the game. Union was able to get a timely strikeout though to maintain a slim one run lead.

Union regained some breathing room in the eighth inning when Curran doubled to right center and then a Clarkson throwing error on a bunt single by Cullen. That run proved unnecessary as Clarkson went down in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.

Andrew Smith pitched the first six innings for Clarkson and allowed four runs on ten hits and six strikeouts to take the loss. Mark Connor fired the last two innings for the Green and Gold and allowed one run on three hits. Miller and Pirro each had two hits in five at bats for Clarkson. Pearson went 1-3 with two walks as well for the Golden Knights.
