Clarkson Offense Helps Team Stay Alive with 11-1 Win

In an elimination game, the Clarkson University Baseball team exploded for 11 runs to keep the season alive as the Golden Knights beat Vassar 11-1 on Thursday afternoon in Rochester.

Clarkson is now 17-17 on the season while Vassar finishes the year 19-19. Clarkson will face another elimination game tomorrow afternoon with the Green and Gold taking on the loser of a morning game between RIT and Union.

After leaving the first inning with the bases loaded and zero runs scored in the loss to Union earlier in the day, Clarkson did not repeat the mistake against Vassar. Chris Miller started the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and then moved up on a Brad Pearson sacrifice bunt. After a Dom Pirro walk, Joe Fraser laced a single to left field to score Miller.

Vassar was not behind long as the Brewers tied the game in the top of the second. A single and a hit by pitch gave Vassar two baserunners to open the frame. A fielder's choice erased the lead runner, but then a walk loaded the bases. Clarkson pitcher Ted Wilson was able to limit the damage as he got a sacrifice fly and a strikeout to end the inning with just one run scored.

Clarkson regained the lead in the second as Pirro smashed a two out double to right field and then scored on Fraser's second RBI single, this one back up the middle. The Golden Knights added another run in the fourth. Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra started the inning with a single up the middle and Ruiz-Sierra moved all the way to third base on a Joe Stockman sacrifice bunt and a Mike Messier groundout. It looked like Vassar might get out of the inning when Miller hit a ground ball, but a Vassar error allowed Miller to reach and Ruiz-Sierra to score.

Clarkson blew the game open in the seventh inning. After two quick outs, Pearson kept the inning going with a single through the left side. Pirro followed with a single through the right side and then Fraser got his third RBI of the game with a single to left field. Cam Bando singled through the right side to knock in another run. Ben Knauf kept the rally going with a single up the middle to score Fraser. After Bando and Knauf pulled off a double steal, Ruiz-Sierra roped a double to right center to score both runners. Joe Stockman closed out the scoring with a double up the middle to plate Ruiz-Sierra.

Clarkson added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Pearson reached on an error and then Pirro and Fraser hitting consecutive singles, with Fraser picking up his fourth RBI. After two consecutive outs, Ruiz-Sierra singled to score the 11th run of the game for Clarkson.

Ted Wilson threw a complete game, his third of the season to earn his seventh win of the year. Wilson allowed just three hits, four walks, and one run with six strikeouts. Fraser and Ruiz-Sierra finished 4-5 with Fraser knocking in four runs and Ruiz-Sierra bringing home three. Pirro finished 3-4 with a walk and scored three runs.

Clarkson's next game will once again be an elimination game with the Golden Knights' first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm.
