Winn Hits Seventh Homer of Season in Knights Split Versus RIT

Potsdam, NY – Home runs proved the difference makers on Sunday afternoon, but the Clarkson University Softball team was on the good sign of only one of those round trippers as the Golden Knights split a doubleheader against RIT, winning the opener 5-2 before dropping the nightcap 5-3 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 11-11 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers moved to 16-7 and 3-1. Clarkson will take on the University of Rochester (10-8, 0-2) on Monday afternoon.

It took little time for Clarkson to get on the scoreboard in game one, as the Knights pushed a run across in the bottom of the first. Raeanna Dunn reached on a bunt single and advanced on a wild pitch and another bunt before coming home on a Michele Winn single to right. RIT came back briefly in the top of the second when Alexandria Lunderman scored from third on a throwing error, but Clarkson responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Liz Caggiano led off with a double and was removed for pinch-runner Katie Pelton. Pelton moved up to third on a single from Bridget Woolley, but came around to score when the return throw from the outfield glanced off her and close to the fence. Woolley later came around on a passed ball to make the score 3-1 in Clarkson's favor.

In the top of the third, Erin Guinan hit a solo home run to pull the Tigers back within one, but once again Clarkson replied with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jamie Bridge led off with a single and trotted home when Michele Winn lofted a home run over the right field fence, just inside the foul pole, giving Clarkson a 5-2 edge. Neither team would score again, as Clarkson held on for the win.

Bridge picked up her seventh win of the season, allowing five hits and no walks in six innings of work. Maggie Stark came on in relief to earn an easy save with a three-run cushion. Dunn and Winn each went 2-for-3 at the plate for Clarkson.

In game two, RIT got off to an early lead with a run in the top of the second as Sarah Thayer, Alexa Farner and Erin Guinan strung together consecutive hits to make it 1-0. Clarkson scored three in the bottom of the third. Kyrstin Messier and Summer Lancette each singled and moved up a base into scoring position on a wild pitch. Raeanna Dunn then hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1, but even without that play, Clarkson still would have scored with a single from Bridge and a double to the wall by Winn, making it 3-1. Two runs came around for the Tigers in the top of the fourth on a throwing error to tie the game at 3-3, but the difference maker came in the top of the sixth when Tori Blaker hit a two-out, two-run homer for a 5-3 lead, which proved to be the winning margin.

Lancette, Bridge, Winn and Messier each had two hits for Clarkson, while Katie Pelton was saddled with a tough-luck loss. Pelton came on in relief in the fourth and allowed just two hits over three innings, but they happened to be back-to-back hits, including Blaker's home run. Blaker finished 3-for-4 for the Tigers, and Sierra Valentine picked up the win, scattering five hits over 4.2 innings of relief.
