Bridge Wins Game One, Saves Game Two as Clarkson Sweeps Rochester

Potsdam, NY – Timely hitting and solid pitching proved a tough combination to beat on Monday as the Clarkson University Softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of the University of Rochester, 3-1 and 6-3, at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 13-11 overall and are now 3-1 in the Liberty League, tied for second place one-third of the way through the conference slate. Rochester saw its record evened at 10-10 overall and 0-4 in the Liberty League. Clarkson travels to play Union College on Saturday.

Clarkson took little time getting on the scoreboard in the opener, tallying twice in the bottom of the first inning. Summer Lancette led off with a single and moved up to second when Raeanna Dunn reached on an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt. The duo then stole second and third, setting up an opportunity for Jamie Bridge, who delivered a sacrifice fly to right. Moving up to third on the play, Dunn then scored on a ground-out by Michele Winn. In the top of the second, Rochester put together a two-out rally that culminated in an RBI-single by Harleigh Kaczegowicz. The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when Clarkson scored a single insurance run. Kyrstin Messier led off with a single, but was put out at home on a relay after a Lancette double. However, Lancette stole third and was able to score on an error when no one covered the base.

Jamie Bridge stymied the Rochester bats for six innings, allowing just three hits and an unearned run while striking out five to pick up the win. Maggie Stark came on and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. Lancette went 3-for-3 with two runs as the only Clarkson player to record more than one hit. For Rochester, Kaczegowicz went 3-for-4, recording three of the team's four hits. Eleni Wechsler took the loss, giving up eight hits and two earned runs in six frames.

The Yellowjackets came out strong in game two with three straight hits to load the bases. A dropped pop up just outside of the infield allowed one run to come in and Samantha Malecki singled home two more runners to make it 3-0. That was all that Rochester would get, however, as Clarkson chipped away at the lead over the next three innings. The Knights got one back on a bases loaded groundout in the first, and Messier delivered a run-scoring single after two runners reached on back-to-back errors in the infield in the second. The momentum shifted in the third as Clarkson put together a four-run, two-out rally. Liz Caggiano seemingly singled harmlessly to start things off, but Danielle Whitham reached on a walk and Leah Allen followed with a single to plate Caggiano, tying the game at 3-3. The bases were loaded when Messier was hit by a pitch, allowing Summer Lancette to single home another run, giving Clarkson a 4-3 lead. One batter later, Raeanna Dunn delivered a two-run single to right-center to put Clarkson up 6-3. Neither team would score the rest of the way, as each of the team's pitchers wiggled out of jams. In fact, the Yellowjackets had a runner in scoring position in each of the last four innings but couldn't push anything across, leaving 11 runners on base overall in the contest.

Leah Allen earned the win, pitching four scoreless frames of relief, to improve to 3-3 on the season, and Bridge came on to pick up a five-out save. Lancette again was the only Clarkson player to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. For Rochester, Both Kaczegowicz and Wechsler went 3-for-4.
