Clarkson Splits with St. Lawrence in Sunday Doubleheader

After two anemic offensive performances in a row, the Clarkson University Baseball team saw its bats come alive in the fourth game of the weekend to salvage a split of the season series against St. Lawrence.

Clarkson is now 14-15 overall on the season and is 11-7 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence has a 10-13 overall record and is 8-6 in conference.

In the first game, Clarkson's offense was shut down as the Golden Knights fell 6-1.

St. Lawrence scored a run in the top of the first inning thanks to an Adam Reichel lead off double and then a Devin Robson sacrifice fly. Clarkson answered though with a run in the bottom of the first. Dom Pirro worked a two out walk and then Joe Fraser singled through the right side. Cam Bando then ripped a double into the right center gap to score Pirro.

That was all the scoring through the first four innings, as each team put zeros up on the scoreboard. St. Lawrence was finally able to change that in the top of the fifth. Reichel again started the rally with a single up the middle and then two batters later, a Clarkson error that could have ended the inning moved Reichel to third base. That cost Clarkson when Robson singled to right field to score Reichel. The Saints added four more runs in the top of the sixth inning with Michael LeFevre's three run double putting the exclamation point on the rally.

Clarkson did put two runners on base in both the bottom of the sixth and bottom of the seventh innings, but none came around to score.

In the second game, Clarkson offense broke out for eight runs in the first three innings and the Green and Gold never looked back as they surged to an 11-4 victory.

In the bottom of the first, Bando was hit by a pitch to give Clarkson its first baserunner. Fraser then singled through the right side to move Bando up, with Pirro following with a single through the left side to score Bando. Chris Miller followed with a long fly ball that allowed both Fraser and Pirro to tag up and advance. A Ben Knauf single scored Fraser and then a St. Lawrence throwing error allowed Pirro to trot home.

Clarkson added to its lead with a big third inning. A St. Lawrence error and a Pirro walk gave Clarkson runners on the corners with only one out. Miller then roped a double to deep center field to score Fraser. A Knauf walk loaded the bases and Joe Stockman came up with a big hit for Clarkson, as his double down the left field line scored Pirro and Miller. Mike Messier kept the rally going by working a walk and then Brad Pearson singled back up the middle to score Knauf and Stockman.

St. Lawrence had a chance to get back into the game in the top of the fifth inning when two singles and a Clarkson error loaded the bases before the Golden Knights had recorded an out. A single by Jeremy Gerringer scored one run and then a Reichel ground out added another. After a walk loaded the bases once again, Clarkson pitcher Mike Bubniak was able to escape the jam thanks to an inning ending double play.

St. Lawrence got even closer in the top of the eighth. Two singles to start the inning gave the Saints baserunners, and then a wild pitch allowed Brendon Frank to come all the way around from second base and score. A Robson sacrifice fly added another run as LeFevre came home.

Clarkson answered right back though in the bottom of the eighth to regain a comfortable cushion. Singles by Fraser and Miller, as well as a walk by Knauf loaded the bases for the Green and Gold. Zach Riccardi then reached on an error with Fraser scoring. Another double down the left field line for Stockman scored two more runs and provided the final margin of 11-4.

Andrew Smith took the loss in the first game for Clarkson. He threw five and one third innings, allowing four runs (three earned), on ten hits and two strikeouts. Ryan Riley relieved him for two thirds of an inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits and one walk. Ethan Kornbrek did not allow a hit in his one inning of work. In the second game, Bubniak got the win with a line of eight innings pitched and four runs allowed on nine hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. Nate Burns pitched a perfect ninth inning to close the game out.

Fraser finished with five hits in nine at bats between the two games. Stockman had a career high three hits and four RBI's in the second game.

Clarkson will host SUNY Canton for a midweek non-league matchup on Wednesday in Jack Phillips Stadium.
