Clarkson Shuts Down Canton 3-1

Two weeks after losing a 10-7 affair, the Clarkson University Baseball team held SUNY Canton to just one run and got a measure of revenge with a 3-1 win in Jack Phillips Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Clarkson is now 15-15 on the season while Canton falls to 7-24.

Clarkson took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but that was the only scoring for the first six and a half innings. Jon Schwartz led off the bottom of the first with a single for Clarkson and then moved all the way to third base on a groundout. Schwartz scored when Michael Warnick singled up the middle. The hits were the first collegiate hits for both Schwartz and Warnick and the RBI and run scored was the first for Warnick and Schwartz respectively.

With the bats on both sides struggling, the lead stayed at just one run until the bottom of the seventh inning. After two outs to start the frame, Schwartz walked to keep the inning alive. Ben Knauf followed with a single and the pair moved into scoring position thanks to a stolen base for each. Joe Fraser then came through with the big hit, a single to left field that allowed both Knauf and Schwartz to score.

Canton got one run back in the top of the eighth. Wilson Matos hit a double to deep left center and then came around to score on a single by Brandon Welch. The Kangaroos made it interesting in the top of the ninth as the first two batters singled to put the tying run on base. A bunt moved both runners into scoring position, but Nate Burns came in and did not allow either to cross the plate to nail down his fourth save of the year.

Gavin Ryan got the win for Clarkson in his first career start. He pitched three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and two walks. Ethan Kornbrek followed Ryan with three scoreless innings of his own, as he also allowed one hit and two walks. Ryan had one strikeout while Kornbrek notched three. Mark Connor pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits and one strikeout. Ryan Riley started the ninth inning and allowed two hits before Burns got the final three outs.

Schwartz went 2-4 in the leadoff spot with a walk, while Warnick and Fraser combined to go 2-4 in the three hole with all three RBI's.

Clarkson will close out the regular season with a four game set against Union. The series will start with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Jack Phillips Stadium.
