Wilson's Complete Game Helps Clarkson Split at St. Lawrence

A late rally fell short as the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon in Canton.

Clarkson is now 13-14 overall this season and 10-6 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence sports a 9-12 overall record and a 7-5 Liberty League mark.

In the first game of the day, Clarkson jumped out in front early and never looked back as the Golden Knights cruised to an 8-1 win.

Clarkson opened the game with two runs in the top of the first. With Chris Miller and Dom Pirro on base and one out, Joe Fraser singled down the right field line to plate both. An RBI double by Brad Pearson in the second inning and a Cam Bando home run in the third extended Clarkson's lead to 4-0.

Clarkson added another run in the top of the fifth. Ben Knauf worked a two out walk and moved up to second base on a wild pitch. He came around to score when Joe Stockman singled into center field. St. Lawrence finally got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the fifth, but a Clarkson rally in the top of the sixth killed any Saints momentum. Nate Burns started the sixth with a single and then Pearson was hit by a pitch. After the pair moved up on a passed ball, Miller doubled to right field to score them both. Two batters later, Fraser hit a sacrifice fly to score Miller to make the score 8-1.

In the second game, Clarkson brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning, but could not bring him around to score, allowing St. Lawrence to complete a 4-2 win.

The first run of the game was not scored until the bottom of the fourth inning. The first three St. Lawrence hitters reached base in the inning to load the bases. A flyout and a strikeout gave Clarkson hope that the Golden Knights could get out of the jam without allowing a run. However, a single by Brendon Frank brought in two runs. Clarkson was able to end the inning when Knauf threw Frank out trying to stretch his single into a double.

A sacrifice fly in the fifth and a run scoring double in the seventh, both by Devin Robson, extended St. Lawrence's lead to 4-0. Clarkson's offense finally began to show signs of life in the top of the ninth. Pirro started the rally with a one out single to left field. Fraser followed with a double to right center. Unfortunately for Clarkson, a relay from the right fielder to the shortstop and then to home plate got the ball there before Pirro could come around to score and he was tagged out. Bando kept the hitting going with a double down the left field line to score Fraser. Bando then scored himself on a single up the middle off the bat of Knauf. Knauf stole second to get into scoring position, but it did not matter as a strikeout ended the game.

Ted Wilson started the first game for Clarkson and threw a complete game, allowing just one run in seven innings on four hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Rory Corcoran took the loss for Clarkson in the second game. He finished with a line of four innings pitched, two runs allowed on four hits and two walks, and two strikeouts. Mark Connor pitched the final four innings and he gave up two runs on three hits and three walks, to go along with four strikeouts.

Miller and Burns were the only Clarkson hitters with multiple hits in the first game while Pearson did the same in the second. Fraser had a team high three RBI in the first game and Miller knocked in a pair of runs as well.

Clarkson and St. Lawrence will meet again on Sunday for another doubleheader. The action will move to Potsdam, with first pitch in Jack Phillips Stadium scheduled for 1:00 pm.
