Knights Drop Pair at Sea Gull Classic

Salisbury, MD – Although the Clarkson University Softball team scored first in both of its games in the Sea Gull Classic on Saturday, the Golden Knights couldn't come away with any victories, falling first to Salisbury 5-3 and then dropping an 8-3 decision to Washington College.

The Golden Knights open the season at 0-2 for the second straight season after the first doubleheader in Salisbury. The host Sea Gulls improved to 4-4 with a sweep on the day, while Washington College moved to 3-3 with the split. The teams will meet once again in doubleheaders on Sunday.

With Salisbury debuting its refurbished ballpark, there was a great deal of pomp and circumstance in pregame, but it Clarkson would christen the new field with the first run. Sophomore Liz Caggiano delivered a one-out single and was replaced for a pinch-runner in Samm Swiesz. The freshman advanced to second on a passed ball and an out later Erika Jensen singled down the left field line to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage. The run would stand as the game's only score until the bottom of the fifth when the Sea Gulls tallied on a one-out single. Clarkson responded with a pair of runs in the top half of the next inning as Raeanna Dunn started the frame with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following a fly out, Michele Winn made the sacrifice bunt unnecessary as she homered to left center to put Clarkson up 3-1.

The bottom half of the sixth was all Salisbury would need to complete its comeback. The Sea Gulls put runners on second and third when Caitlin Lake homered to left center for a 4-3 Salisbury lead. The next batter, Amelia Trotter, also homered to finish off the scoring for the Sea Gulls. Clarkson put a runner on in the next inning, but could not squeeze out any more offense.

Both teams produced just five hits, with Erika Jensen going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jamie Bridge took the loss for the Knights, allowing five hits over 5.1 innings while striking out five and walking three.

Though game two saw Clarkson pound out nine hits, the Knights started off slowly before getting on the scoreboard in the third. The Knights saw five of their first six hitters strike out, with just Liz Caggiano doubling to break up the streak. However, in the bottom of the third, Bridget Woolley made hard contact with a triple to right, and Raeanna Dunn followed with a double to left-center to put the Knights up 1-0. Washington quickly struck back with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Shorewomen were far from finished. Washington added two more in the sixth and then four runs in the seventh to gain an 8-1 lead. Down by seven runs with just three outs with which to work, Clarkson nevertheless did not go quietly. Dunn drove home Erika Jensen with a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh and Summer Lancette, after Dunn stole second, followed with a double to drive in Dunn. However, that was the end of the offense for Clarkson and the team dropped game two 8-3.

Dunn and Caggiano each had two hits in the game for Clarkson. Freshman Leah Allen pitched well in her first collegiate outing, allowing five hits and only a single earned run in five innings.
