Winn Homers Three Times in Sunday Sweep at Salisbury's Sea Gull Classic

Salisbury, MD – On both ends of the spectrum Sunday, the Clarkson University Softball team won both a pitchers' duel and a slugfest to finish off its weekend at the Sea Gull Classic held at Salisbury University. The Golden Knights came away with a 4-0 win over Washington College in the morning and then followed with a walk-off 13-11 win against Salisbury thanks to a three-run homer from Michele Winn.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 2-2 on the season and will now get 10 days off before heading to Florida to play 12 games in seven days in the Orlando area.

Game One
For the second straight day, Jamie Bridge made it through the lineup the first time without allowing a hit. Against Salisbury on Saturday, Bridge tossed four hitless innings, and on Sunday she didn't allow a hit for the first three frames. In that time, Clarkson was able to push one run across to give Bridge a modest lead. In the top of the third, Raeanna Dunn hit a two-out single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. The error meant little, however, as Summer Lancette doubled to right-center to score Dunn.

Washington College threatened in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, but in neither case could the Shorewomen score. In the fourth, Leah Stokes led off with a triple, but Bridge induced an infield popup and struck out two straight to end the inning. In the fifth, a one-out single by Alli Saul caused a bit of a threat, but the true threat came when Saul advanced to second and nearly came around on a blow to the gap. However, Summer Lancette made a lunging, diving catch near the wall in the left-center gap to keep the Knights up 1-0.

Clarkson used that momentum to score several runs in the top of the sixth. Lancette delivered a one-out single up the middle and then stole second. The next hitter, Jamie Bridge, fought off a number of two-strike pitches and finally got one she could handle, singling up the middle to plate Lancette. Michele Winn followed with her second homer of the season, hitting a two-run shot over the right field fence to make the score 4-0.

The bottom half of the sixth saw Washington College put another leadoff hitter on, but again the Shorewomen came up empty. The seventh was more of the same thanks to solid defense from the Knights. The Shorewomen placed runners on first and second with a single and a walk, but a flout and a double play ended the game. It looked like a shot up the middle might allow Washington to push one across, but Raeanna Dunn scooped up the grounder and nearly in stride touched second and fired a strike to first to finish off the contest.

Bridge pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and two walks over seven innings, and struck out eight for her fourth career shutout. Lancette went 2-for-3 with a run and a run batted in, while Winn drove in two runs with her fifth-inning homer. For Washington, Maddie Bennett took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over 5.1 innings. Bennett struck out seven hitters in her time in the circle.

Game Two
Michele Winn became the Golden Knights' all-time leader in home runs in her first collegiate weekend. Though Clarkson's program is only three years, and now four games, old, Winn blasted a pair of home runs in the Knights' 13-11 victory over Salisbury. The two teams combined to pound out 36 hits and only one pitcher, Clarkson's Jamie Bridge, saw their earned run average go unscathed.

Clarkson started the game with a run on a single up the middle by Liz Caggiano, but that was only the beginning of the offensive fireworks. Salisbury pushed a run across in the top of the second and two more in the third on a home run by Mikayla Meehan. The Golden Knights responded with three runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run single from Ali Schwenzfeier and a run-scoring double from Kyrstin Messier. Caggiano drove in another run with an infield single in the bottom of the fourth to put Clarkson up 5-3, but Salisbury tallied five runs in the top of the fifth. The Knights chipped away at the newly discovered deficit when Maggie Start drove in Messier after the freshman delivered a two-out double. Salisbury added three more in the sixth to take an 11-6 advantage and appeared ready to close out the Knights.

The Golden Knights showed that the offense was far from finished in their final two at bats. Jamie Bridge singled and was driven in when Winn homered down the right field line to make the score 11-8. Bridge pitched a quiet top of the seventh to keep Clarkson in the game and the Knights' slugging ways did the rest. Summer Lancette singled up the middle to drive in one run and make the score 11-9, and Bridge reached on an error, allowing Raeanna Dunn to scamper home to pull Clarkson within one, 11-10. Winn then bashed her fourth homer of the weekend to straight away center, driving in three for a walk-off 13-11 win.

Bridge finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored, and she also collected the win for her scoreless seventh inning. Winn went 3-for-5 with five runs driven in, all on homers, while Messier was 3-for-4. Caggiano, Schwenzfeier, Lancette, and Erika Jensen all went 2-for-4 for Clarkson.
