Clarkson Splits Against Tufts and Babson

Although the offense scored 22 runs in two games, the Clarkson University Softball team had to settle for a split of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.  Clarkson now has a 6-4 record so far this season.

In the first game of the day, the Golden Knights put 17 runs up on the scoreboard en route to a 17-9 defeat of Tufts.

Michele Winn got the scoring started with an RBI single in the top of the first, scoring Raenna Dunn. Tufts answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead, but that was the last time the Jumbos held the lead.

Clarkson tied the game at two in the third when Dunn scored with Jamie Bridge getting the RBI. Bridge came around to score on a single up the middle from Liz Caggiano. The rally was capped by a three run home run off the bat of Ali Schwenzfeier, her third in the last three games. Samm Sweisz and Danielle Whitham scored on the dinger.

Tufts scored two runs in the bottom of the third, but Clarkson pulled away as the Green and Gold scored in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Schwenzfeier knocked in her fourth run when her single scored Bridge. Clarkson then added seven runs in the top of the fifth. Dunn got on base to start the frame and advanced to second on a passed ball. Summer Lancette followed with a single to put runners on first and third without an out. Bridge then doubled to right center to plate Dunn. Two batters later, Caggiano flied out to center field and Lancette tagged up to score. Schwenzfeier was hit by a pitch and then Erika Jensen singled up the middle to score Bridge. Krystin Messier singled next to load the bases. Bridget Woolley slapped a single through the left side to score two runs. Dunn then hit one through the right side to score Messier and Woolley.

Tufts made a brief comeback in the Jumbos half of the frame. After loading the bases, a bases loaded walk brought home a run and then Jamie Steven then hit a grand slam to center field.

Clarkson scored three more runs in the top of the sixth to put the game to an end. Katie Pelton launched a home run to left field. Then with two outs, Schwenzfeier once again was hit by a pitch. Then Jensen, Messier, and Woolley all singled in a row to score two more runs.

Bridge pitched the first four and two third innings to get the victory. Maggie Stark recorded one out and Leah Allen closed out the final frame.

In the second game, Clarkson fell to Babson 9-5.

Lancette started the scoring with a solo home run to right field.

After that though, it was one way traffic with the Babson offense taking off. The Beavers tied the score at one in the third inning and then took a commanding 8-1 lead with a seven run fourth inning.

Bridge scored in the fourth on a wild pitch and then Caggiano doubled in the same inning to score Karlie Neuhausser. Winn got the Golden Knights even closer with a two run double in the fifth inning as Dunn and Lancette. However, the rally was snuffed and the Beavers got one run back in the seventh to make the final margin 9-5.

Allen took the loss on the mound as she pitched the first three innings. Pelton then relieved her for the final three and two thirds innings.

Clarkson will have an off day on Monday before taking on Luther College and SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday.
