Clarkson Beats New Paltz in Pitchers' Duel

Although the Golden Knights fell to fifth ranked Luther in the first game of the day, the Clarkson University Softball team won a close 2-1 game against New Paltz to split the doubleheader. Clarkson now has a 7-5 record on the season.

In the first game, Clarkson hung tough with Luther for the first three innings. The game was scoreless in through the first two innings, but Luther took the lead with three runs in the top of the third. All three runs came with two outs in the inning as the Norse had four hits in the frame.

Clarkson answered with two runs in the third. After two strikeouts to start the inning, Raenna Dun singled to center field. Dunn came around to score when Summer Lancette drove a deep double to left center. Jamie Bridge then singled to center field to plate Lancette. Bridge stole second and Michelle Winn walked to out the tying and go ahead runs on base, but Liz Caggiano flew out to end the inning.

Unfortunately for Clarkson, the Luther offense had caught fire and four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings put the game away. The Norse once again staged a two out rally in the fourth as seven straight hitters reached base after Clarkson retired the first two batters. Then in the fifth inning, Anna Strein's three run home run to right field made the score 11-2, which ended up being the final margin as the game ended after five innings.

Bridge took the loss on the mound for Clarkson as she allowed five earned runs in three and two third innings. Maggie Stark and Leah Allen both pitched two thirds of an inning, with Stark allowing four runs while Allen did not allow a run.

The second game of the day was a classic pitcher's duel. New Paltz had the first great opportunity to score as the Hawks had runners on second and third in the second inning, but a flyout ended the rally.

Clarkson took the lead in the third inning. Danielle Whitham started the inning with a bunt single and then stole second. She came around to score when Lancette launched a monster home run to right field.

The Hawks answered in the third thanks to a triple to right center by Taylor LaFrance. She scored when Taylor Leonette hit an infield single.

After that inning, the pitchers took over the game. Katie Pelton started the game for Clarkson and allowed just the one run in five and one third innings. Allen relieved her and got the final five outs to record her first collegiate save. The most important part of the game was in the sixth inning as New Paltz had runners on second and third with two outs. Allen was able to induce a pop out to end the threat and then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to end the game. On the other side, Lauren Capello pitched all seven innings in the loss.

Clarkson will take on D'Youville College and the University of Chicago on Wednesday which is the penultimate game of the Green and Gold's Florida trip.
