CU Softball Drops Two Extra-Inning Affairs at Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – It has been more than 50 games since the Clarkson University Softball team had to play extra innings, but the Golden Knights were snake bit on Wednesday as the team lost a pair of extra-inning contests at Plattsburgh State, 8-7 and 4-3.

The Golden Knights fell to 17-11 overall with their fifth and sixth straight losses, though five of those six defeats have come by a single run. Plattsburgh improved to 18-10.

In the first game, Plattsburgh scored a run in the first and the third to take a 2-0 lead, but Erika Jensen delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. Leading off the top of the sixth, Summer Lancette homered to give the Knights a one-run lead, and Katie Pelton doubled down the left field line to push the score to 4-2 before Liz Caggiano scored on an error for a three-run Clarkson advantage. In the bottom of the seventh, Kaitlyn Press doubled home a run and Amanda Tantillo drove in two more on a single to tie the game at 5-5. In the top of the eighth Katie Pelton drove home another run with a single to help Clarkson reclaim the lead, but a bases loaded walk by Preiss tied the game at 6-6 and a single by Tantillo gave the Cardinals their seventh run.

In game two, Clarkson took little time getting on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Jamie Bridge scored Raeanna Dunn with an RBI-groundout for a 1-0 lead and shortly thereafter Summer Lancette and Sara Armstrong conducted a double steal for a second run. Lancette drove in Clarkson's third run with a fly out in the fifth, but Plattsburgh scored three in the bottom half of the sixth. Neither team could muster a run in the seventh, sending the game to extras for the second time on the day. Clarkson was unable to get a run in its half of the eighth, but an RBI groundout by Amy Glasshoff scored the single run that Plattsburgh would need in the bottom half of the frame.

Jamie Bridge took the loss in game two despite striking out 10 in 7.1 innings. Katie Pitkin picked up the win by allowing just three runs in eight innings.
