CU Softball Drops Pair to Rochester

Rochester, NY – In both games the bottom of the fourth inning proved to be the difference maker and the Clarkson University Softball team came up short both times as the Golden Knights were swept by the University of Rochester, 9-0 and 4-3, in Liberty League action on Sunday.

The Golden Knights dropped to 17-9 overall and 2-4 in the Liberty League, while Rochester improved to 15-17 overall and 6-2 in the conference. Clarkson will take on a pair of SUNYAC competitors in non-league action this weekend before returning to conference play next weekend.

In the opener, Clarkson and Rochester swapped zeroes for the first three innings, but the Yellowjackets broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs. Jocelyn Blackshear delivered a two-out double to score the first run and Caitlin Price added an RBI-single for the second score before coming home on a wild pitch and overthrow. Clarkson had only one more crack at getting back into the game and was held scoreless in the fifth as Rochester broke the game open and ended things early with the key hit coming from pinch-hitter Lauren Muni. A three-run double by Muni cleared the bases and shortened the game by two innings.

Clarkson took little time getting going on offense in game two as Summer Lancette doubled home Raeanna Dun in the first inning and then the sophomore came home on an error. Rochester responded with a run in the bottom of the second and added two more in the bottom of the second when Shelby Corning delivered a two-run single. However, the Knights would knot the game up at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. Chelsea Elliott reached on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner Caitlin Foley, who was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bridget Woolley then doubled to left-center to plate Foley and tie the game at 3-3. Rochester put together a modest rally in the bottom half of the fourth when Gianna Melillo recorded a two-out single to score Corning. That would be enough for the Yellowjackets as the two teams traded zeroes for the final two and a half innings, giving Rochester a 4-3 win.

Lancette had a single in the first game and went 2-for-3 in the second contest. Liz Caggiano and Bridget Woolley each had two hits in the second game for the Knights.
