Miller Drives in Eight in CU Baseball Split At Vassar

A strong offensive performance, including two home runs from Chris Miller, helped the Clarkson University Baseball team earn a split against Vassar on Sunday afternoon on Prentiss Baseball Field.

Clarkson is now 4-12 overall on the season with a 1-5 Liberty League record while Vassar has an even 10-10 overall record and a 6-4 conference mark.

In the first game of the day, an early offensive barrage backed Clarkson pitcher Ian Castle as the senior hurler picked up his first victory of the season. The Brewers opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the first, but Clarkson struck back immediately. Anthony Padrazo led off Clarkson's half of the first with a triple to left field and then scored when Will Coleman followed him with a single to right field. Coleman advanced to third on wild pitches and then trotted home when Greg Jasek lined a single through the left side. Miller put an exclamation on the rally when he homered to right field, the first home run of the season for Clarkson.

Clarkson added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Padrazo again reached base to open the frame, this time with a walk. Padrazo advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Coleman, putting him in scoring position. The move paid off when Jasek singled to left field, with Padrazo moving to third on the hit and then scoring on a Vassar throwing error, with Jasek able to take second on the throw. Miller grounded out, but moved Jasek up to third with Jasek then coming home on a wild pitch.

Vassar closed the gap with a run in the top of the fifth, but three more Clarkson runs in the bottom of the sixth salted the game away.  Coleman doubled to lead off the inning and Jasek followed him with a walk. That brought up Miller who drove the first pitch of the at-bat over the right field fence to give him five RBIs in the game.

Castle threw a complete game to pick up the victory, moving his record to 1-3. Castle allowed just one earned run on five hits and two walks, with four strikeouts. Johnny Mrlik threw all six innings for Vassar, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and eight walks, striking out six.

In the second game, Clarkson again took a first inning lead when Miller singled home Coleman. Vassar answered with a run in the top of the second, but Clarkson regained the lead with two runs in the fourth. Jasek started the rally with a double to center field, followed by a Miller single to the pitcher. A throwing error scored Jasek and moved Miller to second base. Brad Pearson followed Miller with a single to right field to score Miller.

Vassar had the chance to blow open the game in the top of the fifth when the Brewers hit three consecutive singles to load the bases before Clarkson could register an out. However, pitcher Ted Wilson was able to limit the damage to just three runs, keeping the Golden Knights within striking distance as the score was 4-3 after five innings.

Clarkson rallied once more, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Paddy Defino hit a one-out single to center field and then took second base on a wild pitch. A Vassar error on a ball hit by Ben Knauf allowed Knauf to reach and then advance to second and allowed Defino to come around from second and score. Dom Pirro then singled through the left side to score Knauf from second. After a Vassar pitching change, a Padrazo single and Coleman walk loaded the bases with one out. After a Jasek strikeout, Miller worked a walk to score Pirro to make the score 6-4.

That was the last time Clarkson led though as three two-out hits for Vassar in the top of the seventh scored two runs and tied the game for the Brewers, with Vassar then taking the lead with three runs in the top of the eighth. Clarkson threatened in the bottom of the eighth when a Miller single scored Padrazo and put the game-tying run on base, but the rally was snuffed by Vassar and the scored finished 9-7.

Ted Wilson pitched the first six and one third innings for Clarkson, allowing four runs on ten hits to go with five strikeouts. Andrew Smith relieved him and allowed two runs in two thirds of an inning. Mike Bubniak picked up the loss, allowing three runs. Ryan Riley closed out the game with a scoreless one and two thirds innings.

Miller finished the two games with 6-7 with two walks and eight runs batted in and three runs scored. Coleman (3), Jasek (2), and Pearson (2) all had multiple hits in the first game while Padrazo had a pair of hits in the second to go with his triple in the opener.

The two teams will play a rare Monday doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1:00 pm.
