Clarkson Women's Hockey Opens 2016 with Trip to Yale and Brown

PDF of weekly release

After a 34 day layoff, the fifth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team will return to action when the Golden Knights hit the road for two ECAC Hockey games. First, Clarkson will travel to Yale University for a 7:00 pm game on Friday night, followed by a trip to Brown University for a 4:00 pm game on Saturday.

Led by eighth-year head coach Matt Desrosiers and second-year assistant coaches Britni Smith and Meghan Duggan, the Green and Gold finished the 2015 portion of their schedule with a 15-3-2 overall record and a 3-3-2 conference mark. Yale and Brown are the only two ECAC Hockey teams Clarkson has not faced this season, although Clarkson's two victories over St. Lawrence were non-league contests.

Three Clarkson players will take the ice a bit earlier than the rest of their team. Senior captain Shannon MacAulay, senior assistant captain Erin Ambrose, and junior assistant captain Cayley Mercer will all take part in the 2016 Nations Cup as a part of Canada's National Women's Development team. The trio will be joined on the team by Jamie Lee Rattray, Clarkson's all-time leading scorer as well as the 2014 Patty Kazmaier award winner.  The 2016 Nations Cup will take place January 4-7 in Füssen, Germany.

Mercer is closing in on 100 points in her Clarkson career. Mercer notched two goals in the victory over Cornell and now has 96 points. With four more points, she will become the tenth all-time Golden Knight to reach the century mark. She will join her sister, Carly Mercer '14 who is second all-time with 150 career points. Also approaching a milestone is Ambrose who has 117 career points. She is one behind Juana Baribeau '12 for fifth all-time and is within striking distance of Melissa Waldie '11 who is fourth with 121 points. Ambrose is also the all-time leader in points among defensemen.

Senior assistant captain Olivia Howe will look to make sure her torrid offensive pace in 2015 carries on into 2016. Howe grabbed 19 points in the 2015 half of the 2014-15 season and followed it up with 22 so far this season. She trails just Mercer in points and goals and is third on the team with 12 assists. Howe leads the team with four game-winning goals.

Sophomore goaltender Shea Tiley closed out 2015 with her sixth shutout of the season and the 15th of her career. Tiley is just the fourth Clarkson goaltender to reach 15 shutouts in their career and is five career shutouts behind Kira Hurley '07 and Lauren Dahm '11 who both racked up 20 shutouts. Tiley is fourth in the country in goals against average at 1.32. She is also tied for fourth in shutouts (6) and 11th in save percentage (.933).

Yale comes into the weekend with a 4-10-1 overall record and a 3-4-1 conference record. The Bulldogs sit just outside the conference picture as they are currently tied for eighth. Yale has already played two games in 2016, dropping a 1-0 game at Quinnipiac followed by a 5-1 loss at Princeton. Yale is fifth in the conference in scoring offense, but is tenth in scoring defense and has allowed 2.62 goals per conference game. The Bulldogs have especially struggled on the penalty kill, going just 17 for 23 in conference, the 11th best mark. Clarkson leads the all-time series 15-6-1, but Yale left Potsdam with a 3-2 victory last January. That win broke an eight-game unbeaten streak for Clarkson against Yale.

Brown is tied for 11th in the conference with Union. The Bears have a 3-11-0 overall record and a 1-7-0 conference mark. Brown has been the least prolific offensive team in the conference, scoring just five conference goals and only 16 total goals. It is also at the bottom of the conference in scoring defense, allowing 3.62 goals to conference opponents. Brown is riding a three game losing streak, including a 6-1 loss at Princeton and a 5-1 loss at Quinnipiac to start 2016. Clarkson has an all-time record of 16-4-3 against Brown, including a 5-1 away win and a 6-0 home win last season.  The last Brown victory over Clarkson was in 2007, a span of 16 games, with Clarkson winning 14 and tying two over that stretch.
