Overtime Goal Ends Shutout Bid for Golden Knights, Lose to Princeton 1-0

Princeton, NJ – A wrap around attempt barely a minute into overtime by Riley Sorokan finally ended what could have been a scoreless tie, but the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team instead came up short in a 1-0 overtime loss to the Princeton Tigers on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in ECAC Hockey play while Princeton moved to 4-3 and 4-1 in conference games. Clarkson faces Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon.

The overtime game-winner came 53 seconds into the extra session when Sorokan took the puck behind the net and appeared to try to center it in the slot. However, the puck bounced off a skate and back to Sorokan, who never broke stride, and she finished with a wrap around to end the contest.

Holly Gruber finished with 26 saves for the Golden Knights and Uma Corniea finished off her shutout with 24 stops.

Clarkson tilted the ice to its offensive zone for much of the first 10 minutes, but couldn't get many attempts through the Tigers' defense. The best chance of the period for Clarkson came with a nifty pass through traffic into the slot for Manon le Scodan, but her attempt was stuffed at the top of the crease. Late in the period, Princeton evened out the offense with a strong run of its own, only to see Holly Gruber make good reads to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.

The second period began with strong skating but without results in the way of shots on goal. Clarkson began to get some opportunities around the midway point of the frame. A turnover in the offensive zone gave Janelle Evans a chance from the point that was denied, and a few moments later a hard drive on the right side by Sara Manness was also flipped aside. Near the end of the period, Clarkson was whistled for a penalty and Princeton found itself with numerous chances on the Golden Knights' cage, but again Holly Gruber stood tall, turning away several good chances by the Tigers.

It was more of the same in the third period for both teams: strong opportunities but empty results. Clarkson's had two impressive chances on quick tries, including one in the slot by Janelle Evans and then another by Sara Manness from just inside the right circle. With roughly seven minutes to go in the game, it was Princeton that had a chance in the slot when Gabby Kim wristed a shot to the right post, except Gruber leapt across the crease to deny the attempt.

Just before a media break in the third, each team again had chances just 15 seconds apart. Mackenzie Alexander was stuffed on the left side by Gruber, and quickly at the other end it was Raedyn Spademan of Clarkson being stopped in the slot by Uma Corniea. Alexander would have another shot when she got behind the Clarkson defense, but a combination of a hook and a skate save by Gruber kept the game scoreless. To no one's surprise, the waning seconds involved more back and forth as Rosie Klein's shot from the right circle was stopped and sparked a 2-on-2 in the other direction. Sara Manness tried a wrap around with three seconds left but the puck trickled away from the net, sending the game to overtime.
